I'm pleased to report that nothing about Born to Be Blue is standard. As brilliantly acted by Hawke and fluidly written and directed by Robert Budreau, the film plays riffs on Baker's life without adhering to facts or formula. And yet you leave the film with a fuller understanding of who Baker was and what drove him.

Not enough to chew on story-wise, but a great performance by Hawke as flawed jazz great Chet Baker. Also: the Miles Davis in this movie was a better physical approximation than Don Cheadle in Miles Ahead. In the final analysis, the performances, clever direction and good soundtrack are not tantamount to a great movie. If you're really moved by character driven movies then perhaps give it a try.

After the disastrously mannered I Saw The Light and Miles Ahead here's the real deal - the comeback cat, yes, but mainly a love story with a good woman, who in Chet's heart only came after dope and the mystical of his art. It's straight, sad, and handsome, just like the complete artistry of Ethan Hawke's Baker embodiment.

The Jazz musician Chet Baker according to Ethan Hawke! Similar but more mellow white brother of the Miles Davis film Miles Ahead (2015), telling it's story through flashbacks and music. Could possibly have needed more punch considering it's dealing with a addict and his issues, but I guess they wanted to focus on the positive.

The life of troubled jazz musician Chet Baker (Ethan Hawke), whose struggles with drug addiction and acceptance by the greater jazz community cut his life short. Robert Budreau's stylish direction and above-average script, along with strong performances from Hawke and Carmen Ejogo as the woman he loves, make for one of the better musician biopics out there; points also for the understated, yet devastating finale.

Not knowing anything about Cher Baker or his life, I think Ethan Hawke did a great job portraying a flawed human being who want to root for despite him not deserving of it. The storylines and other characters left a bit to be desired but a nice portrait of a man nonetheless.
