Boy Erased

Can't put my finger on why this didn't impact me like I hoped. Perhaps Edgerton's direction, with its reliance on inappropriate slow motion and music cues. Hedges is excellent and Crowe – developing into a strong (and portly) character actor – makes an impression. One scene between the two, near the end, is by far the best in the movie and gives one a glimpse of the powerhouse this could have been.

Low-key simmering family drama does surprisingly little exploring of Jared's sexuality, instead framing it as a story of religious cultism and a fractured family dynamic. The character remains something of a cipher but Hedges is very good here - film is stolen by a magnificent Kidman, while Crowe with the tougher, less substantive role also performs wonders. The scenes within the church program are pretty fair and even sympathetic in their way to the practitioners.

Gay torture porn for a straight audience

Lucas Hedges and Nicole Kidman are cool. I liked their whole relationship. I also like how there wasnt really a big crescendo that got built to it was more subtle moments packed together or moreso the big moments got restrained. Not a good movie by any stretch tho

Some nice performances, but it all feels too neat and simplistic to actually work. Absolutely no trauma, just some family easily solved by a powerful mom. Russell Crowe is unbelievably bad here.

Based on a true story Boy erased focuses on the disturbing practice of conversion therapy Nicole Kidman gives a good performance as a concerned mother and Russell Crowe is equally good as the father who refuses to accept his gay son I'm not familiar with the other cast members but they are good as well in particular Lucas Hedges

Kudos to Edgerton for not taking the route chosen by many social justice activists these days & overstating how bad the gay conversion program is by painting its adherents as horrible people. Indeed when Kidman questions Edgerton's ability to practice, I had to grin bc the overwhelming majority of the program is rooted in psychological ideas, esp in programs like AA. The tendency to believe the client is unconsciously avoiding a feeling is also common. It all feels true & ultimately moving

I found the onscreen text at the end of the movie, quite overbearing and preachy. If you'd just watched the entire movie, you will have gotten the message. Other wise this was quite a well told story. The scene where Jared was trying to leave the camp & was being cornered made me viscerally anxious.

The story is very honest and powerful, but ultimately too sterile for my taste. Hedges and Kidman are good. Crowe while not bad (he does a fantastic job with the accent as an Australian) never fully stops being Russell Crowe. Plus The very end after the climax is a huge mess.

Weirdly structured with, if you ask me, confused messaging and blame in the wrong places. Kidman, Crowe, and Hedges are all good here but it's missing something that could have given it life.

Kidman, Edgerton and Hedges are fantastic. Concerning story that is portrayed well.

Not as powerful and heavy as I expected, but all around very well made movie, with solid performances, writing and directing. It’s great seeing Edgerton become more of a character actor, I didn’t realize how much of a chameleon he could be. It’s not nearly on the level of Edgerton’s The Gift for me, but it’s a a great film that could’ve used more attention at the Oscars.

All scenes we're good, but I felt it needed one or two more guy punches to make it truly great.

Hedges and Kidman are quite good, and even the odious Russell Crowe is okay, but this is a horrifying subject treated ever-so-very delicately and it just doesn't work. Methinks Garrard Conley should have done the adaptation of his novel himself.

This is a difficult movie to watch. Not just because of the content, but also because it never has the resolution you want it to have and seems to be missing something to make it an exceptional movie. We've progressed a lot since this era (1990s?), and hopefully these type of things don't exist to the extent that they did in the past. Being an art-house film that needs a college aged actor, it of course includes Lucas Hedges as the leading actor.

Not as strong as The Gift, a good film but it is now as strong. Very strong performances from the actors, and good direction but it feels like a bigger movie but doesn't deliver on it. A sad story but should've been more powerful.

The scenes are all good separately. But I felt like they didn't come together naturally. It could have been an amazing movie. Now it's good. Not great but good enough. Lucas Hedges is truly amazing. He broke my heart again.

I think the subject matter deserves more impactful telling than this bland, conservative and unexciting depiction. I get that they wanted to stay true to the source material and keep the movie grounded, but the end result just feels constipated.

It was the first Sunday morning after the movie released and only 4 people turned up for the movie. That kind of sums up the attention the movie got and how the theme tends to drive away folks even in this day and age. Based on a true story it offers an interesting peek into the workings of a gay conversion program. Most of it is psychological and there's nothing graphic or jarring (or may be it was censored). It is a decent watch with stellar performances.

[TIFF 2018] The script is a bit stilted and forced, especially towards the end, but it's undeniably moving and upsetting. Edgerton is a talented director and writer who puts his quality source material and cast to good use. A Q&A followed the show with the real life counterparts on stage after having watched it for the first time, which obviously added to the experience.

Not that I even liked "The Gift" - but this was still a rather big disappointment from Edgerton, who structures the film with no sense of confidence and never manages to quite pinpoint the humanity of these characters. Hedges and Kidman are the only pillars that hold their weight as the rest of "Boy Erased" crumbles into itself.

Just bit more action/drama would have made it better.

Fine, though I've largely forgotten it less than a month later.
