Mike is a jaded editor who writes for a romance magazine. Angelina is a helpless romantic who's traveled to Canada from Italy to marry a man she doesn't love. When Mike's neighbor, an oddball poet, writes a lyric that falls into Angelina's hands, she assumes that it comes from Mike. And so, in typical boy-meets-girl fashion, a simple misunderstanding causes romance to blossom. Now they just have to learn to speak each other's language.

Strenuous efforts to arthouse up the romcom—opening through a broken fourth wall; Mantegna and Nelligan's campy chorus; gently surreal bits like the central couple's sudden ability to speak each other's languages—aren't too successful, but a young Hampshire sure is, in a difficult role as a doe-eyed Little Italy waitress who doesn't speak English. The scene where she shows up to her secret love's bachelor party with everyone thinking she's a stripper is so dumb but sold beautifully.
