Boy Meets Girl

I'd rather watch "Gummo," but Jean-Yves Escoffier's photography is gorgeous, as always.

Beautifully shot but frustratingly tedious and self-indulgent musings on young angsty love.

The tone and pace are absolutely perfect, giving insight into Alex without overexplaining or overexamining. There's a nice character progression, enticing dialogue, wonderful emotional touches and the great cinematography I've come to expect from Carax.

An intriguing and artfully shot piece about the ever-powerful themes of lust and longing and relationships. Carax mixes Godard (the pretentiousness) and Lynch (the w-w-weirdness) and comes up with a fascinating mixed bag -a film that's filled with too many striking surrealistic images to ignore but also too detached and opaque to be emotionally fulfilling.

The last 40 minutes of this movie are sublime. Carax's combination of nocturnal melancholy, desperation, fantasy, and romance is exhilarating and deeply affecting and it pushes all of the right buttons for me because I feel things deeply and am often an emotional wreck.

If only I knew all along that this is more or less the movie of my dreams. A fragile, tempestuous, tragic and invigorating work of art.

Beautifully shot and designed -- a Romeo and Juliet-kind of tragedy shaped as a simple film about death as the ultimate stage of love --, Carax's debut lingers in the life of these two broken-hearted and lost lovers, in a sort of surrealistic tale about depression -- or how it feels when you it seems impossible to move on after the most disappointing event of your existence.
