Mostly filmed in 1981 and then completed two years later following the drowning death of Wood. Though the FX are great, fortunately they aren't the whole show thanks to excellent acting from a restrained Walken, a sadly affecting Wood, and a crusty Fletcher in her best role. The hokey "power of love" ending is borrowed wholesale from _Altered States_.

Has some pretty cool ideas that aren't elaborated on very well.

Cool concept, but one that isn't quite taken full advantage of. Most of the action seems restricted to expensive-looking laboratory sets and not enough through the lens of this technology. A little slow for that reason. Walken, Wood, Fletcher and Robertson make up one solid cast though.

I wouldn't fault anyone who calls this style over substance, because the visuals are by far the best part. The retro futuristic production design is outstanding, and switching between 35mm and 70mm was ahead of it's time. I also love Horner's score, and Walken, Wood, and Fletcher are great. Unfortunately the screenplay is messy as it doesn't always set up what's going on very well. Highly recommended for those who like retro futuristic sci-fi, but others should probably steer clear of this one.

An excellent cast helps raise this messy movie above bad.

A team of scientists invents "The Hat," a helmet that allows sensations to be recorded from a person's brain and converted to tape so that others can experience them. The team includes estranged husband and wife Michael and Karen Brace (Walken and Wood), as well as Michael's colleague Lillian Reynolds (Fletcher). At CEO Alex Terson's (Robertston) instruction, the team demonstrates the device to gain financing for more development. One team member, Gordo (Jordan Christopher), has sexual interc

Great script, beautiful score by Horner and a solid performance by Walken. Too bad the visuals and the rest of the cast make this seem like a poor b-movie.

It's a good concept that got fumbled, the first half is fairly failed and it unfolds in a manner leaving much to be desired. The second half picks up the pace and even though I didn't like the direction the plot went, it was still contenting. As a whole this is nothing more than a failure to be skipped over or otherwise forgotten about.

On my list to rewatch for 40 years! Sadly, the plot and dialogue weren't what i'd hoped, but some of the effects are worth the ride.

Was trying to remember this flick from watching probably 20 years ago, found the trailer and it all started flooding back in the old noggin. Lots of good ideas brought up here and the acting was all good especially Walken. Reminded me of more recent films like Transcendence ('14), The Discovery ('17), Vanishing Waves ('12).

There was a good film in there, but this wasn't it. Felt like nothing happened the entire time I was watching it.

Wouldn't even call it a film, it's that lacking in coherence. The cool concept is taking nowhere and the characters are more likely non-characters. Poor Natalie Wood is a prop. (and don't forget, Christopher Walken was on the boat when she died)

Trumbull is a technology wiz with a knack to all that new-age hippie shit. Brainstorm has the same qualities - a story about scientists vs. military, great special effects (no CGI!), strong moral values... Trumbull made this with the idea to introduce a new cinematic process in this movie, but he couldn't get studio backing. This, and death of Natalie Wood before filming was finished, almost stopped the production, and I am sure the result is not what Trumbull initially had in mind.

The look and premise is pretty cyberpunk for the time but Walken's performance is toe-curlingly mannered. Although Trumbull has a unique vision, he obviously has no idea on how to work with actors.

Rewatched July 2018. Really corny and boring initially but it kinda gets going later. Louise Fletcher is the highlight.

Released fourteen months after Tron, Brainstorm continues the theme of virtual reality's effect on humanity. Ever since Tron there have been movies about virtual reality, even though it never really panned out the way many envisioned... with the head-mounted displays being the primary reason why. But that didn't stop Hollywood from envisioning VR. Brainstorm does it a bit better than more recent efforts, even though Natalie Wood died while filming was on Thanksgiving break in 1981.
