Breakpoint: A Counter-History of Progress
Whether humankind has irreversibly changed the planet is still being debated. Today, progress is our raison d'être, an eternal promise of a better quality of life. But behind the impressive history of progress, there hides another one. It's a story written by powerful people: political leaders, industrialists, chemists, lobbyists and financiers of all kinds who, in two centuries, have shaped our way of life, up until the advent of a new era: the Anthropocene. Made in a rather dull way, but has the advantage of a genuine historical perspective, even if this means it tries to deal with too many questions and topics than are possible at this length, resulting in some simplification of complex questions in a way that approaches one-sidedness. Interesting that it largely stops the narrative at around 1980, assuming that the subsequent story is familiar, I guess, and also interesting that it makes the rare decision not to end with a message of "hope".
