Breathe In is a good movie, although its share of problems keep it from being a great one. For the most part, it has great performances and characters, and feels realistic and truthful. But its moments of cliché take us out of the experience and rob it of that credibility. It also wants to be at least partially about a family but focuses too predominantly on the two lead actors instead of being more of an ensemble affair, meaning when the supporting cast gets involved, you have to question why.

What makes Breathe In rise above its predictable plot is its emotional resonance, acutely evoking its characters' longings and desires. Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones are marvelous.

poignant and sad. The slow build up in the first half of the film is very believable but the ending lost that sense of realism.

Nice and quiet.

Doremus certainly has a way with capturing mood fit for his characters, but beneath all the surface tensions and tightly wound drama lies a stifling amount of hot air.

So basically this is pretty much the exact same movie as Nobody Walks, which one might think would be a better fit for Doremus' unpretentious sentimentality than Russo-Young's prickliness, but if anything actually shows how, while far from great, Nobody Walks is at the very least better than people give it credit for by comparison. Doremus is a dependably stylistically assured filmmaker, but for all his earnestness i think he might actually be the exact same person as Destin Cretton in disguise.

Between this and "Like Crazy", Drake Doremus must have gotten his shit wrecked by a foreign exchange student. I enjoyed this far less however, as what started as a fragile love affair turned way too heavy-handed for my taste. Still some magic to be found between the two leads.

Felicity Jones is charming, beautiful, a little pouty, and totally irresistible. Guy Pierce is also very charismatic. The chemistry between them is undeniable. Every character was well written and well acted. The story is a long slow build up to the affection you know is coming. Just as their dreams begin to take root, things move very quickly and their lives are abruptly reset. Worth watching, but perhaps not for everyone.

First half of the movie is excellent, then the plot happens for the sake of plot happening.
