Attempting to follow in the footsteps of great Russian films by showing WW2 through the eyes of a boy soldier, this film is imbued with national pride, patriotism, historical fact and authentic decor and atmosphere. The battle scenes are bombastic and brutal, but not genuinely harrowing, and there is a general lack of emotional impact amid the formulaic heroic characters. While Ivan's Childhood and Come And See were powerful and memorable war films, this is more along the lines of Perm Harbor.

Solid movie with some good effects and good action. The world needs more movies taking place on the eastern front. Every once in a while, having a kid as a focal point becomes a little irritating and this movie tends to err on the side of nationalism and heroism, but it's hard to knock it for that, most American war movies do too. The Brest Fortress was basically like a Russian Alamo, something that you'd rarely hear about if you don't live in Russia, for that, it's a pretty revealing watch.

Meh. Just like a typical Hollywood production. Overblown, painfully cliched and cynically manipulative. Seen it all before, and not a patch on the likes of Come And See.
