Urban fantasy has long since been loitering around in books, and has infrequently stepped into film with little success. "Bright" isn't groundbreaking, and it's social commentary is about as disguised as a pebble hidden in a wine glass, but it's fun. If you're the type to have no qualms with kicking off your shoes and enjoying a fantasy/action popcorn flick, this is for you. Extra points for Edgerton who plays an orc with fantastic comedic timing better than he plays a man, which is also good.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Crash had been a bit more like Warcraft? No? Well apparently Max Landis has. And David Ayer is here to double down on the concept by going End Of Watch on it. If you find this ridiculous, I don't blame you. Seing orcs dresses as gang bangers, takes some willingness to accept, But for me it hit the sweet spot.

a stupid and largely bad movie, and the fact that Netflix spent 90 million dollars on this is a joke. at the same time, there are far worse movies that cost far more money, and why this inspired more vitriol and derision than something like Justice League says a lot about the reverence and benefit of the doubt given to brands and corporations.

What happens when a scriptwriter smokes too much weed at a D&D party, then takes his character sheets to Netflix and uses them to roll some more blunts for the executives he's meeting, who, after smoking the blunts, call up Will Smith and offer him $1,000,000 to come down to San Diego and sing Wild, Wild, West for them.

While it is no masterpiece, I found it perfectly entertaining fantasy meets End of Watch, meets Alien Nation. The leads do well together and if you can suspend disbelief and some campy dialogue and scenarios being used as metaphors for race relations, you can find some enjoyment.

Surprisingly boring and poorly thought out.Comes off as a series of "and then this happened".The jokes and half the dialogue appear to be ad lib and not that great, Rapace is wasted like the other main cast. The world building isn't fleshed out and seems generic as a result ("dark lord") with only lip service to events 2000 years ago,and no explanation of how we have elves and orcs transplanted blandly in to a modern society. The magic is sparce, dull, and ill defined.Go watch Alien Nation

This is a shockingly bad B-movie concept that somehow made it into production with a big star. Imagine my shock to find that it's surprisingly decent with good action. It's as close as we'll ever get to Shadowrun the movie. It takes its own mythos seriously and Ayer manages to make the grit of this bizarre world realistic. The dialogue is funny at times but it never sinks into tongue in cheek parody or breaking the fourth wall nonsense. This may have been a good enough setup for a series.

Bright has an excellent concept, but that's its only positive attribute. It's poorly paced, shoddily edited, and written by someone who apparently doesn't understand how to make characters naturally swear or develop characters at all, for that matter. Smith and Edgerton are good, but their characters are too one-dimensional for me to care about them at all. It's not quite as bad as others say it is, but it is boring, bland, and a pretty lazily made film.

They create an interesting world and the leads are fine. Every time you start to get drawn in, the dialogue takes you right back out. Things as simple as referring to it as a "magic wand" rather than just "wand" definitely dragged it down a bit. Still, not a waste of a lazy afternoon.

Before we begin, let me say that I say all of the following as someone who has played way too much Shadowrun and D&D. This is a fucking sheltered nerd's idea of clever social commentary. Heavy-handed, far too convinced of its own cleverness and taking place in a world that is simultaneously overly convoluted and undercooked, Bright is, at best, a passable action movie but is more often just mildly annoying. I should at least like this but I couldn't stand it at all.

It was entertaining but there was no disguising it's thinly veiled parables for racial tensions in the modern day. If you've ever been curious what End of Watch, or really any other serious cop drama, would be like with orcs and fairies and elves, this will answer that question.

It's an interesting premise, and despite a heavy hand here and there the world building keeps things fresh - at first. The writing is the weak part, rendering characters as shallow stereotypes, and repeatedly exhibiting gaps in logic. By the time what is supposed to be an intense emotional moment is undone by a deus ex machina that leads to more dei ex machina, I couldn't take any of it seriously anymore.

Dumb but beautiful. Great production design and special effects are wasted on a fantasy world populated with caricatures and filled with cliches, of which the occasional subversion was nice. Lots of failed attempts at humour, too. Still, it's the only Shadowrun adaptation we'll ever get, so appreciate it.

Kinda unique in that it actually has no acts, it's all just one mushed together chase sequence after the silly intro. Occasionally funny, mostly at the end. The concept is both preposterous and bizarrely interesting. Doesn't really craft its lore well enough and some of the dialogue is pretty brainless. I don't really understand why the elf acted like Leeloo for the first half.

Let me start with this: this is absolutely not a great movie. It's a neat premise (if a little "this thing meets this thing" pitch-y) but the worldbuilding isn't that hot, there's nothing unique or impressive about the way it's shot, and narratively it's not very satisfying. But as a gimmicky buddy cop action movie, it's not nearly as bad as the critical reaction would suggest. Smith and Edgerton are having fun with their roles and it passes the time without being too aggressively dumb.

Watchable but uninspired action movie suffers from wanting to be too many things at once - an urban cop drama, a splashy comic book movie, even a (ham-fisted) race relations satire; because it can never settle, it ultimately becomes a bit difficult to take seriously. Further hampered by truly inane dialogue, including frequent profanity that feels clunky and awkward (or perhaps it is Smith who suffers from a clunky and awkward delivery.)

Hard to enjoy a film written by a blight on humanity. Fortunately, there's not all that much to like about this, so it's no great loss. The review here likening it to Shadowrun actually helped a ton with the immersion, but the lore and characters and politics are much too weak to make it work. It seemed like a more sensibly directed film than Suicide Squad, but wow, the final third was so painful and boring to get through that I barely made it. 12th film of 2018

This is competent and enjoyable for the most part, but it is flawed. Some of the dialogue is daft, and the script only hints at a compelling mythology; this could have been such a neat mash-up if they took the time to expand the lore rather than merely touching on it. It's a movie, the audience doesn't know everything that happened prior even if the characters do. I like Landis but the weakest part here is his writing, which feels weird to say. But still an enjoyable buddy cop fantasy flick.

It is a bit messy but the concept is interesting and surprisingly well executed. I feared the racial themes would be too heavy handed and although they are very obvious and not really anything new, I think that it's surprisingly well done and the movie does justify the magical setting as a means for the exploration of those racial issues. The world-building is top-tier and the tone is perfect. It's enjoyable and far from generic, I'd recommend checking it out with an open mind.

Bright is an urban fantasy cop movie, similar to Alien Nation's sci-fi slant of the same. It's violent, entertaining, and has Noomi Rapace as a badass elfen mage. It also features 90% less selfless sacrifice than Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which is fine by me.

Will Smith and David Ayer are back for their second team up, and for the most part, is thoroughly entertaining. Smith and Edgerton's chemistry is pretty solid, but Edgerton's character definitely felt more fleshed out. The script and pace are both lacking, as Ayer tried too hard to cram in comedic relief that didn't really work, and left too many irrevelant scenes that bog down the film. Where Ayer missed most was the lack of a explored lore, as the creatures presented feel simply bland.

Bright sells itself as urban fantasy that blends the social commentary of science fiction with the spectacle of high fantasy. I guess I set myself up for disappointment. The world is poorly thought out and explained, the plot delivered haphazardly and the characters are just not interesting. The cast did a decent job with what they were given, and Edgerton was at least entertaining. Unfortunately, Bright is neither entertaining nor meaningful, just painfully mediocre.

A perfect exhibition of modern fantasy that reminds me of Shadowrun. I wonder if the filmmakers were inspired by the games. Will Smith describes the film as a blending of Training Day and Lord of the Rings. It is an accurate description of the best qualities of both films. I heard Netflix has already greenlit the sequel and I'm looking forward to it. Excellent dialogue, editing, effects, world building, and just the right amount of humor. The only weak area is the antagonist's motivation.

Bright is very rough around the edges. I like how they delved into urban fantasy, but felt that they didn't really present enough of the world so that we could understand very much. I felt that the story could have really been a lot more than what it was. Despite all this I enjoyed it. Would I have enjoyed it more with a bit better story and development of the world? Probably, but if you just take it as a urban fantasy buddy cop movie it was a fun watch.

If this is Netflix's idea of a big-budget blockbuster, they need to seriously rethink their choices because this is not going to be sustainable in the long run. There are lots of little complaints but the biggest just how poorly-written the entire thing is. An entertaining action film set in alternate Earth where magic exists but progress has rattled on. It's not Shadowrun but nobody said it was. It's light entertainment with plenty of action, one liners and special effects that does what it says on the tin. It's fine from an entertainment point of view. It's no worse than your typical cop drama, though this one has the added fantasy element. It's good to see Will Smith on screen again but it did feel a little phoned in (or it just seemed like a cliche role for him). The major problem for me was that it wants you to believe in this mystical, alternate universe, without giving much backstory or context and because of that, at times, it can feel a little messy.

This movie had me hooked. Yes the concept needs to be fleshed out a little more. The magic was very sparse through out but the film relied heavy on social commentary and gritty set pieces to help convey the message of a world destroyed by crime and division. After building that Landis isolated a particular event within this undefined world to try and get audiences to connect with the characters. It worked and in my opinion it worked well thanks to the bankable stars cast to make it come to life.
