I'm sure I'll sound pretty much like everyone else here, but the general consensus is that "Brightburn" has an intriguing new spin on the Superman story, but botches the execution horribly. The chief problem here is that for a movie that spends a good half of its runtime setting up this evil version of Superman, but it fails to convince the audience that the evil origin is believable--even the traditional Superman was more believable, and that's a low bar to miss.

The Gunns walk into the pitch meeting with a covered easel. “Show me”. A crude photoshop of Elliot Rodger’s head on Superman’s body.

This is a cool premise that you can really dig into: there's a lot of questions you can ask about pop culture's fascination with superhero mythology, the psychology of adoption and parenthood, puberty/growing up, sociopathy, etc. Unfortunately this movie is content with "Superman but bad!!!", getting by on some cool sequences and a good Elizabeth Banks performance but not much else. A real disappointment that leads you to wonder why they even bothered if they didn't have anything to say with it.

Thanks to the visionary filmmakers of our time we got to see "what if E.T. was evil?", we got to see "what if superman was evil?"...and yet the most important question still goes unanswered: what if the people behind this crap were good?

We Need To Talk About Kal-El has a good premise, and one we sorely need at a time when the entirety of Western culture has turned into one big superhero franchise. Unfortunately it never really does much with that premise, adding neither depth, character, or much of a sense of fun to it. Some nice gore though.

Spoilers. This movie wasted my time. The movie establishes a "what if" premise - what if child superman was evil and kills people? My problem is that the movie never explores the answer. The only answer we get is the question repeated back to us...if he's evil and kills people then he's evil and kills people. The end. It never progresses past the premise. Nothing else happens or is explored beyond that. That is a fundamentally flawed story.

The movie never puts meat on the bones of its premise, merely gives you various money shots of Superman's powers used for ill. I will say it has incredibly convincing and detailed graphic effects, and it is generally cool that somebody did make this a movie. I just wish it was a short instead of a feature if they weren't going to do more than was done here

A nice little gory movie. Everybody seems to be talking about that eye, but I was much more freaked out by the jaw scene. Seat belts people, that's why we wear them! I think I would have liked it more if I hadn't just been reading The Boys, which takes a somewhat similar concept, but really runs with it. But if they get around to making Evil!Aquaman and Evil!WonderWoman, my butt will be in the seat to watch them.

A film with serious potential settles for rendering a flipped concept into a traditional slasher film with new elements. Well acted by Jackson Dunn the film just added one too many clichés which ultimately hurt the originality factor it had going. Aside from potential this film didn't really do anything unconventional and while still entertaining did not wow me like I was expecting. Squandered opportunity like many good ideas that have come before it with poor execution.

Brightburn's biggest flaw is it's lack of depth. It fails to provide anything meaningful to its a characters, and doesn't provide much exposition to exist. Instead of telling a interesting arch, or presenting fresh ideas, it shrinks to being a supervillain torture porn feature. Admittedly, it does it well, with some good effects and gore, not to mention a weird atmosphere, but that can't be its backbone. I appreciate for providing a interesting synopsis, but it hardly attempts it.

This one seems to divide opinion. It must have found me in a good mood, because I rather enjoyed it. I liked the premise and the somewhat bleak execution of it, and there was something quite satisfying about some of the gory moments. I suspect I won't feel a great urge to go back to it, and I don't think it would withstand much scrutiny, but I enjoyed the diversion and the take on the Superman story that it brought.

I struggle to take the premise of this movie seriously and in execution, it's equally as laughable. We're given no reason why Brandon turns evil beyond him inherently being that way, the Superman symbolism comes across as laughable and lazy, the attempts at jump scares come across as more funny than scary, and the costume looks retarded. This movie is god awful, but I hope it creates an expanded universe where I can continue laughing at these tryhard edgy attempts at "superhero horror."

There's so much potential here for future sequels, that I'm already disappointed that it'll never happen. I've always thought of this scenario in my head...how much destruction could Superman do if he were evil, and how would anyone stop him. They wouldn't. He would just go on killing everyone in his way, and that's what this movie is. Little story and lots of kills....and it''s glorious!

Completely baffled by the lack of love for this. Sure, it's too short and slight and doesn't explore its themes in any meaningful way, but in an era of severely overlong and over-indulgent superhero movies, this mean, nasty, no holds barred approach to the Superman myth had me on the edge of my seat. Fantastic work by the SFX team as well. How did they manage to make this look so good on a budget of 6 million dollars? Fully onboard with the idea of a sequel.

Here's the boardroom pitch for this movie: He's Superman, only he's a bad guy! Isn't that just "Man of Steel"? No, it's a horror movie! Isn't that just "Man of Steel"? No, this has a lot of gore and no character development to speak of. Oh ... sure, why not? It'll also be like "Stranger Things", only set in 2016, so the deliberately retro touches will be confusing. Wait, why do we want to make this?

Smallville meets The Omen! A concept with a lot of potential, but Brightburn fails to meet it. Instead we get a movie that takes itself far too seriously without any substance for doing so. They could at least have made it more fun by being a bit campy or OTT. The main kid is neither creepy nor evil enough to pull this off, and instead always has a dopey look about him which is in contrast to his supposed intelligence. Entirely predictable and lacking tension, Brightburn is more of a DullFizzle

For the pros, the premise is good, and the actors carry their weight. The cons are more nitpicks, but there’s a lot. Nearly every jump scare is lazy and unnecessary. The first third of the movie is a collection of unrelated brief scenes where something weird happens. There is no depth to Brandon, with the movie snapping its fingers to make him evil, instead of him getting high off power or something. Banks’ character isn’t a great protagonist either. It’s kinda fun, but underwhelming.

Brightburn is as underwhelming as it is painful to watch. The promise of a Superman gone wrong (and given the final scene, this is undeniably the movie's aim) is squandered by focusing on a bratty child's tantrum over what seemingly amounts to a week. My main problem with the movie is that the characters and the plot are driven solely by dumb decisions, to the point where barely anyone is likable (or even sympathetic). The movie doesn't shy away from gore, though I didn't like that either.

Brightburn is a film built entirely around a fantastic premise. For those who were already in it for the concept, it'll work just fine. For those who are seeking an intelligent reversal of the Superhero genre, Brightburn is nothing more than a superpowered slasher flick. A well-acted but extremely watered down version of the far superior Chronicle (2012)

Great concept, wasted opportunity. What starts as an intriguing idea is wasted because it goes unnecessarily full gore-horror mode and takes itself way too seriously, sucking the fun out of this. The story is also a little directionless; I mean there's not much you can do if Superman is not on our side, right? So they kinda paint themselves into a corner and it doesn't have a satisfying ending which only adds to the issues that this had.

Some of the effects were good and the premise is interesting but this was not a good movie. The acting is bad all around, the story is threadbare and lacking, they never give good reasons why things go the way they go or why the various characters act the way they do or do what they do. The idea could have worked but I'd say this was a fail.

I can say I enjoyed it but most of that was because I was waiting for the story to expand and be more than superhero torture porn. I figured something neat would happen. The premise is great, and admittedly if this happened in real life this is what would happen, but this still could have been executed better. Where's the actual plot exactly? What Warren said is true: there's a lot to dig into but it doesn't really do any of it.

A very strong premise & some great performances by Banks, Denman & Williams as well as the supporting cast cannot save an extremely muddled script that runs into more & more problems as it goes along. Hurt by an awkward opening sequence, rushed or nonsensical character development, too much left unexplained & some moments that are more corny than scary, it does have positives- specifically the (mostly) believable Brandon character & the gruesome kills. It's nothing amazing, but it's okay.

"Dude, what if we wrote a slasher movie, but the killer is like evil Superman as a kid, and also there's this other plot line that's really convenient and doesn't make sense, where his parents can't decide if they know he's a weird alien or not, and also we never combine the two or go anywhere with either of them, and it's really trashy and silly, but takes itself super seriously?" "Duuuude....duhuhuhuuude!" The ending was pretty cool, though. Not that it mattered. Also liked the jaw thing. :)

A dark and gruesome exploration of the idea "what if Superman was an evil teenager?" It would definitely be better with a longer run time and deeper examinations of its themes, but there's plenty of weird to enjoy here. The moment that the kid realizes that he doesn't have to do what his parents tell him any more is great, as he comes to understand that there can be no real consequences for his actions. Movies that deconstruct the standard super hero tropes are always welcome in my book.

It's not enough to have a cool premise. For a movie about a supernatural killer boy I expected a few turns here and there. This was more of a straight toss of the ball down a straight corridor.

Brightburn didn't live up to its potential. It was mostly a Jump-Scare Horror cliched ride that was not doing anything all that interesting with the actual characters. The kid is never really explained why he is evil from the very beginning and he just scares people for no good reason. A lack of character development just made the whole thing feel hollow. Some of the shots are nicely done and the acting is good especially from the kid himself. Some okay action, but overall just wasted potential.

It's a decent premise with just laughably bad execution, occasionally reaching points of "so bad it's good" but not often enough for the movie to be overall enjoyable. The main character takes part in a lot of horror-movie stalking which makes no sense for him to carry out in the logic of the movie, but is supposed to hopefully spook the audience a little by its framing and timing. Several plot threads are set up and not paid off, but I can at least respect them for not taking the easy ending.

Concept is brilliant. I just wholly hate "how" Brandon became the villain. It is in a fashion that completely robs him of any agency to his actions. Therefore he doesn't feel _any_ consequence for his actions and neither do I as a viewer.

I thought this was a lot of fun. Obviously, there's not a whole lot to the story, but it's mainly about creating suspenseful and scary moments, and I think it succeeds in that. This movie is basically the nightmare Batman had about what Superman could become in BvS, and that's why I will always defend that Batman was justified in his actions in that movie.

Competently made, but the "Evil Superman" premise ironically undermines the horror by making the villain too powerful. Every kill consists of Brightburn pointlessly toying with his victims for the whole scene since he can vaporize anyone in an instant.

This was basically "We need to talk about Kevin" but with less explanation. That film scored by showing the upbringing of the kid and why he was a bit deranged. In this one we just have to accept he is!. We dont know why he was evil, what prompted all this, what his aims were, why the spaceship glowed a rather pleasant shade of red every so often, why the metal could harm him ... but hey ho, we did get to see some rather nice splatter effects, especially the cop, so what do you expect for $6m?
