Laughably pretentious. An eleventh-rate director putting his last name on the title screen? A horribly botched attempt to amalgamate Das Weisse Band and Tarantino. Even Guy Pearce can only do so much with the blood-curdlingly corny lines he's given. The whole thing is painfully, heart-stoppingly immature, and feels like some sort of sick fulfillment of the director's perverted sexual fantasies. An arrogant, arrant abomination. 10/100 for Pearce.

Brimstone is an utterly nonsensical, insanely exploitative piece of trash. It starts out funny with Koolhoven pretentiously putting his name on the title and using chapters. After that you get 2,5 hours of violence against women. This is done without any respect to the subject, and so exaggerated that it almost becomes comical - which it shouldn't. On top of that Pearce is a magical murderer who can find and kill anyone unseen at any time. Fuck this movie.

There are many words that one could use to describe Brimstone, and I'm pretty sure the vast majority of them are synonyms for "repugnant." This is a nasty, unenjoyable film that is far too long and lacks in point and purpose. It's like a Lars von Trier Western but without any bigger goal in mind. For the most part, it's not even extreme enough to count as exploitation; it's just miserable. Despite some good technical merits, there isn't any reason to watch Brimstone.

A strange film that is presented in four out of sequence chapters (chronologically they are shown as 3, 2, 1, 4). Visually Brimstone is strong, and has a number of quite grisly scenes which serve the dark storyline well. Unfortunately only chapter two works well. Three is ok, but one is painfully drawn out and four is a terrible climax to the story we've had to suffer through. I have zero interest in rewatching this nor could I find much worth recommending to anyone else.

A well-told tale but also kind of dour. There wasn't much "point" to it.

A story about an incel. The villain is the purest of evil, you actually get involved into the story because of how much you hate him . The mood is grim, the pace is brutal, every act is more tragic than the previous one, don't watch this if you're looking for a fun time.

Guy Pearce is one of the most terrifying villains that I have seen. His character's preternatural ability to show up at the worst times and in a very Terminator-like fashion just kept coming. Dakota Fanning's character was so strong yet so sad. The abject pain of the events in her life helped shine a spotlight on those few brief moments of peace and joy. This is not a happy movie but it is an interesting movie. Like Requiem for a Dream it's something to be watched once. It is a lushly shot film.

Starts out very decent but then declines by adding unnecessary flashback upon unnecessary flashback. The epilogue goes against the whole outlook of the movie.

I wanted to like this film, I genuinely did. Koolhoven is a fellow Dutchman and I have been following his work for a long time now. Brimstone, in short, is a masterclass in style over substance. It almost feels, when the credits roll, that Koolhoven wants to mimic a good film. It just doesn't truly feel like one. The chapters along with the heavy biblical symbolism feel corny and overdone, the script isn't particularly great, either. The visuals however do look fine. Decent film.

The first act was kind of boring and I was wondering where it was going to lead after the conflict gets sort of resolved but from the second act, you got a lot of answers although questions are left open too. I enjoyed it a lot.

I don't know this obsession now-a-days to put in movies in chapters and hustle them up, but it's definitely not working here. I sort of enjoyed it, but I won't watch it again, ever.

Dark story from the old west, as a young woman tries to escape sadistic Reverend Guy Pearce. A real nasty one, full of violence and immorality. Takes a interesting narrative structure as well, telling the story backwards in chapters, which helps it give it that extra edge. Takes itself a little too serious. It's a shock western, relying a little too heavily on brutality to reach it's emotional effect. But there are a lot moments with hard impact and it great to see Pearce in such a evil role!

Brimstone is meticulously written and produced, has convincing visuals and an enthralling life story that does right to the western genre. While I feared amateurism and overreaching (and some here have apparently found it in bundles in this picture), I was genuinely happy with the production quality and wasn't for a moment distracted from the story. Although I read it to be "pretentious" here and there, to me it felt as more sincere than almost all high budget productions of late.
