I really love Jillian Bell and this movie was a good showcase of her being funny but also vulnerable. Bell's character Brittany is based on the true story of an overweight woman who needed to get her life together and she decided to run in the New York City Marathon. There are a lot of good cameos in this movie from New York comedians. I especially loved Ambudkar's character and the job he did bringing that character to life. He made his unlikely relationship more believable though his acting.

Reminiscent of MURIEL'S WEDDING as a film that lulls you into its apparently predictable underdog/"little engine that could" formula, before unexpectedly deepening in the second act into a modestly powerful study of self-image, self esteem and self worth. Aided immeasurably by Bell's wonderful performance and Colaizzo's screenplay, which both refuse to sand the sometimes monstrous and ugly edges from Brittany, while never losing sight of her humanity - right up to the moving finale.

It's fine. I guess the highlight here is Jillian Bell, who up until this movie never really impressed me. It's not that she was ever bad, she was just kind of there. This was a good performance. Aside from that, it has positive messages which is nice, and it takes a few little turns, but it just kind of ran its course. Never bad, never great, entertaining regardless.

I thought this was more of a zany comedy, but it's actually a solid drama with some comedy.

Despite a few clichés, Brittany Runs a Marathon is an enjoyable film that contrasts supportive and toxic friendships, and showcases positive character growth versus self-perception. Bell delights with the prosthetics and her brand of comedy; Watkins, Stock and Ambudkar are great supports, balancing out the film. Colaizzo's direction is decent though flawed, often glossing over progress made, making Brittany's job situation the weaker part of the film. Overall, it's well-paced and entertaining.

Good story, except it is only "inspired" by a true story unfortunately.

Hmm well I did like the general message of discipline and self-improvement, etc., which was all well depicted. Main character could be a bit of an asshole though and it’s all kind of shot and lit like a decent production values YouTube video.

Awards-show darling as swing-and-a-miss for New Sincerity.
