Mostly lighthearted with very melancholy scenes and a fantastic poignant ending, everything you could want from a Woody Allen romantic comedy. It's also another feather in the cap of Gordon Willis, whose photography is almost as great as it is in Manhattan.

A lot of quirky Allen comedy mixed with a little bittersweet drama, it's a very enjoyable film. Allen's neurotics are toned down just a little which makes for a refreshing change and the storytelling nature of the film actually works quite well in keeping the tone balanced just right.

Other than Hannah and Her Sisters, this is the best Allen/Farrow collaboration. There's more of a sweetness to Woody's cynicism, and it works fantastically well with the character of Danny Rose.

Another wonderful romantic comedy from Woody Allen. There are plenty of great scenes scattered throughout (the poem, escaping from the diner, etc.), and I enjoyed the somewhat tongue-in-cheek depiction of the mob. Danny Rose is one of the more compelling incarnations of the "Woody Allen character," but Mia Farrow delivers the stand-out performance as the aggressively neurotic Tina.

There's plenty to like outside of Mia Farrow; Danny Rose is a character not completely removed from the stock Woody type, but he carries an endearing and hilarious optimism that make him stand out amongst a long series of neurotic little men. Gordon Willis is on point as usual; it's not my favorite of their collaborations but it's certainly always welcome. I think my favorite thing about this movie was the ventriloquist with the stammer. There's something rather poignant and iconic about that.

Tier 2 Allen can still be impressive. It's no small feat 2 craft an entertaining screwball comedy that prominently features discussions about the meaning of life & the costs/rewards of being "good" w/out breaking the lightness of the narrative. It's also quite an accomplishment 2 paint characters as broadly as Allen does here - his & Farrow's characters r basically caricatures - & yet never strain the audience's credulity or emotional tether 2 either of them.

Mia Farrow & Woody Allen were never better together than they were in this film. Forget all their personal shit and remember their great movies, like this one.

a solid effort on allen's part, but this one just doesn't keep the laughs coming like some of his best. this movie proves the point that even though the plots of his movies arent always feel-good, woody allen's movies inevitably make you feel good anyway.

What makes Broadway Danny Rose a little different from Allen's other works is that the story within the film aspect allows everybody to be a caricature, which is kind of fun. I say kind of fun, because this is nowhere near Allen's best work. It's not even some of his better work from the decade. Let me be clear. The movie's fine, but not worth seeking out unless you're way into Woody Allen. He's made like 15 or 20 better movies.

Felt like pretty generic Woody Allen to me - Woody playing a neurotic and nebbishy lukewarm-success showbiz guy, Mia Farrow, black and white, New York, vaguely intellectual dialogue mixed with some zany hijinx, bittersweet ending - I’ve just seen it all before. That said this film has a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes so I guess I’m in the minority!

A sweet, sly little unassuming movie, told by pals around a diner table. Not in the top echelon of Allen's movies, but certainly the best of his second tier.

Another great Woody Allen movie. This one is a bit forgotten but I don't know why. The photography is amazing and the jokes work really well. One of Woody's best characters.

That Woody Allen you say you like to impress other people before it got weird to talk about Woody Allen but not before it became ever weirder.

Small, but charming and quietly melancholic. I quite liked the cinematography (the appearance of the costumed hero in the middle of nowhere is a classic image) and the Allen/Farrow dynamic has rarely been punchier.

I want to like it more, but it's way more farciful than it should be. The plot behind the goons going after Woody's character is due to a misunderstanding which to me is a helluva plot contrivance, and Woody's character is a bit too goofy for his own good. This mood breaks away from the rest of the film, which has its moments (the orgasmic getaway) and the cinematography that's pretty good for a comedy film.

It feels O. Henry-like in the way it catches you off-guard, only it's not a Henryesque twist. Rather, it seems to say we've been looking so closely for one meaningless thing about Danny that we missed the really important stuff, that we watched a movie one way and missed what it actually is. Or maybe that's just me. Still, when a movie affects you in a way no movie ever has, something brilliant could be going on. I'm not ready to call it a brillian movie, but it's better than I expected

Probably Woody's most underrated film, maybe because it's so hard to pinpoint what makes it special, but all I know is everything about it works. Danny Rose actually feels more like a real character than most of the surrogate characters Allen creates for himself, Farrow gives her best performance in any of his films, Gordon Willis kills it again with the cinematography and the story is just inherently funny and cleverly presented.

It's a matter of whether you enjoy Allen's schtick for Broadway Danny Rose. I mean, if you're tracking down all his pre-2000 films odds are you do, but otherwise that's what I'd say it comes down to. I've always found him entertaining; a bit like Robin Williams in that he's spouting off joke after joke, except he's actually endearing. This is one of the best of his I've ever seen. The brilliant humor is spaced out, but when it happens it's glorious.

The first two thirds is a preety standard screwball comedy, not really very funny and nothing special. It gets a higher score because of about two or three scenes of the best Woody Allen acting I've ever seen, he shows real sadness, disappointment, betrayal, resignation. It's great, the rest, unfortunately is forgetable. Apart from those scenes, it's another role that Allen doesn't really fit into but he gives himself anyway and a story with nothing really important to say.

Elevated Achre, NYC.

Some really great things happening here. Great cinematography; the black and white really treated the down-and-out mood of the witty script. Woody and Mia are both fantastic. Perhaps my favorite part, however, is the third person narrative of a bunch of guys telling a story. It's brilliantly told.

Very good, but a tiny something is missing. I think it was the latter part of Allen & Farrow's misadventure and escape from the hitmen that left me a little indifferent. The ending of the film, however, with the Thanksgiving of struggling artists and their faithful manager, was a beautiful moment with dialogue that left a warm feeling. This is not one of Woody's greatest achievements, and feels more like a nice way to spend an evening rather than a typical Allen analysis of the human condition.

Broadway Danny Rose is caught between the usual caveats of Woody Allen's scripts without the individual spark of those caveats to make up for their contradictions. It's a comedy that has his character as his most typical but least funny, and its single interesting twist (the assassination plot) exists for less than half of the movie. Then we're pulled along by a dull talent management "plot" and characters like Mia Farrow's who make a personality out of being flat. No reason to recommend.

I'm shocked that this movie isn't more widely regarded as one of Woody's very best, as of those I've seen so far, this is second only to Annie Hall. A phenomenally enjoyable film. I love the structure of the movie, the framing device is great; I love the music, "Agita" has been stuck in my head since I saw this two days ago. The black-and-white gives the hilarious, clever story an appropriately vintage look; Woody Allen gives one of his absolute best performances as the titular Rose. Brilliant.

It took me a while to warm up to this film and I'm not sure if the framing scenes were really needed. It's a simple film and doesn't try to be more than that, but the characters are well written and believable: Allen's Danny Rose is sympathetic, Farrow plays against type and does a good job with it, and Forte provides good support. B/W cinematography by Gordon Willis is beautiful and it's joyful to see all the vintage NY locations. One of the most purely enjoyable Allen films.
