Broadway Melody of 1940

Powell is a bit of a problem. Certainly a lovely gal and a talented stepper, but short on personality. The chemistry between her and Astaire is practically non-existent. If the romance falters, however, the friendship between Astaire and Murphy provides some compelling character moments. The songs all range from good to very good. The comedy is largely supplied by Morgan and a handful of vaudeville acts. Not one I'd bother to watch again, but a generally entertaining diversion.

Great fun... they just don't make 'em like this any more. Contains perhaps the greatest vocal audition ever committed to film.

Fantastic dancing and the story actually wasn't annoying. Some random talent acts add to the fun. I know it's my imagination, but each time I see Fred Astaire dance I think he's better than the last time. Powell was great too, but for her ballet number.

Surprisingly engaging story for the genre and time, Astaire and Powell on good form.

Broadway Melody of 1940 (1940) doesn't have the same amount of wackiness as it's predecessors, but I like the general story better, and with the slickness of Fred Astaire the 1940 version might be my favorite one of the series. And he's got a new dance partner! A rival at the tap-game - Eleanor Powell! The result is fluid Broadway elegance.
