Brokedown Palace missed the mark on so many scenes that it's not worth your time. Either the story wasn't written in a way to give us proper characters, or the filmmakers butchered the story at some point, but the resulting film is one that's hard to care about. It has a message, and the ending exemplifies that, but it leaves us wanting more -- and not in the good way. If prison really did change people, we might have a worthwhile movie.

Good, but lacking anything to make it great.

Seemed a little flat, but I liked the way it was shot...beautiful imagery and the story was interesting.

Just a grinding emotional movie about 2 teenage girls who made a really big mistake in a country they didn't know.

It just never engages that much. Jonathan Kaplan's movies are usually better than this

Great performances, but fairly pedestrian-looking. Girl-on-girl would have elevated this material.

Difficult to watch for all the right reasons, this epic about two girls who learn to be survivors delivers on all fronts.

The cast is solid. Beckinsale, Daines and Pullman are all fine actors who each pull the weight, but the movie just isn't engaging. The stupidity of the main characters is cringeworthy at times and thus you just feel you can't get behind them at all. The only character I found myself routing for was Bill Pullman's, which really shouldn't be right. It's passable, but easily forgettable.

The two female leads: Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale are both excellent in this film. Bill Pullman is also good in this movie. The story is interesting and I did not see the ending coming.

Who cares? The leads were too fucking stupid for me to care about. Every traveler knows you just don't trust shady dudes who make promises when you're vacationing in Thailand.

Jonathan Kaplan's work tends to walk a challenging and often precarious line between social indictment and exploitation, and this is no exception. But he plays the material straight. There are no underhanded story contrivances or moral showboating. It's infuriating in its realistic logic. The pulse of the film is in the performances of Danes and Beckinsale after they're sent to prison.
