A perfect example of what is becoming a specialism of British cinema: family drama focusing on the vulnerable elements and bringing out powerful and heart-rending performances from all. Like a suburban Shane Meadows, this film follows the life of its young star, compellingly and believably played by Eloise Laurence, in a cul-de-sac broken by domestic violence, absent parents and family rivalries. Genuinely affecting, so much you don't even mind when the end is just a series of overblown shots.

Sublime. The cast is excellent - I'm sure we'll see more of Eloise Laurence - and the atmosphere and tense, measured narrative create a great film. I really enjoyed it.

Well done and authentic. Solid performances on everyone's part, especially the main child star.

Full of bold creative choices, much of the music, some structural components, and moments of seemingly out of place comedy, and it all works wonderfully.

Heartfelt and bleak. Doesn't pull it's punches really, though keeps things RELATIVELY tasteful. Great performances by all. Especially Tim Roth who knocks this out of the park

This is an adaptation of a novel that was heavily influenced by "To Kill a Mockingbird", which shows, although it transfers the moral center of the plot to the young girl. It's the directorial debut of theater director Rufus Norris, and it's a great looking film with some nice impressionistic editing and a great cast. It's a good film that really only suffers from seeming to mean a lot more than it ultimately does.

Man, this is a dark movie. But it's dark in the most compelling way, a cover-your-eyes-but-can't-quite-look-away collage of cause and effect social horror amidst working-class Britain. Outstanding performances, a beautifully and shockingly bleak narrative. The finale doesn't quite live up to what came before it, but that's OK.
