Outside of the sometimes shoddy editing, most notably the heavy use of fade outs, Brother still has enough energy to please.

A Russian version of tough-guy films. Fresh and cute.

Cool scenery and colors, bit weak with the editing. You like the main guy, but don't really care about the film in general. Seeing 90s Post-Soviet St Petes was cool though

I didn't really 'get' this I don't think. Still it was entertaining enough for 90 minutes, and had some pretty good acting.

"Director Aleksei Balabanov's matter-of-fact depiction of his protagonist's exploits conveys the blunt harshness of post-Cold War Russia." - Nick Schager

You can't help rooting for this guy. The rave/druggie/fornication scenes took it down a notch or two. But nice style and good overall. Violent, yes, but not overly graphic like Tarantino.

Shows economic collapse of Russia during pro-Western "free market" experiment. Very Russian and exotic.

doesn't really earn its violence. yeah sure the degradation of the collapse or whatever. but I stand to wonder if this kind of power-over was the reason for the collapse to begin with. stunning choreography though, completely stunning

Essentially the Russian Scarface.

Viewed March 28, 2016. Struck me as a dreary Russian riff on the glut of post-Tarantino neo-noirs. I kind of hated it. Barring his superb sense for tough, fluid action sequences, Balabanov's direction displays a level of bland detachment that made it difficult for me to actually get much out of it. The terrible music doesn't help matters much.

Cult classic, but you have to have lived in a post-Soviet country to understand and enjoy it.

The Russian "Taxi Driver". I love it. It's intensely 90s-Russian in all the right ways, especially in the language.

Acting was awesome. Other than that, nothing was as impressive but it felt home. I felt weirdly warm watching everyone lose their innocence. Perhaps it was because of the set up. This movie feels like watching a Gorki novel.
