Duke Johnson visits a small Southern town, intent on burying his brother. A few locals convince Duke to reopen his late brother's nightclub, and soon the local redneck policemen are intimidating Duke with threats of violence. Duke refuses to pay the bribes they demand. Rather than take them on himself, Duke calls on his old pal Roy. Roy brings a few buddies to Bucktown, and they bring justice to the small town. (imdb)

A decent blaxploitation flick that plays against type by featuring a black antagonist to take on Fred Williamson. It's got some gritty low budget action, and it's cool to see Carl Weathers playing a goon called Hambone...but this flick is underwhelming overall. Pam Grier plays a very subdued role, mostly pleading and crying, and the soundtrack is pretty weak stuff other than the funky main theme song. For Grier and Williamson completionists only.

Pam Grier was great (but not as independent as usual). The plot was fine and I was surprised to find out it was based on a true story. It's probably a better story than most since after defeating the oppressors, the group turned on itself. Fav scene: Fred Williamson busting into the bad guys' lair in a tank and then proceeds to mow through the henchmen.

Missing crucial elements of what makes exploitation in general work, this one has little skin, less blood, and not a lot going on in general. All of this could have been forgiven if The Hammer upped his cool game for this one. I guess he was just having an off day.

I respect all four of the reviewers before me but I must protest to two things: 1. Luna6ix mentions little skin but that skin is Pam Grier and I do say, hello, Mrs. Grier. 2. TheDenizen may under appreciate that funky main theme. Damn that’s funky!

Williamson is too cool for school, and the plot is better than most Blaxploitation films.

This movie is far from perfect. The script could have used more work. But there are some good moments. Both Fred Williamson and Pam Grier are good in their roles. Overall I would recommend this film.
