Buddies

For me, the number of really worthwhile gay movies is rather small; this is one of them. Its simplicity and directness is utterly disarming--even with that string quartet music, it seems to me, not setting quite the right mood. Geoff Edholm is spectacularly good, and its hard to imagine a better dramatic foil than David Schachter. Their interaction is so involving you don't even notice that half the movie goes by before any other characters appear on camera. Thought-provoking and deeply moving.

A little ragged as filmmaking and some of the writing is on the nose, but this is a bold, brave time capsule, an essential film of its time. Edholm's raw, honest performance is outstanding.

Despite, or maybe because of its cinematographic simplicity and its naive cameraworks, it feels very authentic and is deeply moving.
