Requiem for a Jarhead. If you would've asked me if Idris Elba was in this movie five minutes after I was done watching it, I would've confidently told you, "No."

Darkly comic, with good performances, a great soundtrack and an admirable lack of morals. Well worth checking out.

I don't remember much about this, but I do recall thinking it was 'cool'.

Joaquin Phoenix is not a very likeable character, but it's not necessary for the main character to be something to admire if the story keeps you invested in watching stuff unfold. I think the main issue is that you're not really that interested in the characters themselves as much as you just kind of want to know how this all is going to work out and how the army is going to explain away everything that has happened. It's just quite average.

The soundtrack contributes to some of these points.

Great film. There are some hilarious scenes, and some very stylish ones too.

Not funny or insightful enough. You can tell it's based on a book because there are like five different random plotlines that don't connect at all.

That tank scene. Dealing with the downtime of the abroad solider is an interesting premise. Meets common ground with Catch 22 & The Americanisation of Emily, BS has the perk of being set in a more relatable era. Phoenix's choice to play pretty close to apathetic pays off.

Not particularly tame material but played off with a flippancy which is nice, but doesn't go far enough in displaying the nature of the vice and feels neutered as a comparison. My boy Joaquin gets less to do than he really should too but on the whole it's a good laugh.

It's really, really fucking hard to root for Joaquin Phoenix in this film. He's not likable at all. And the movie seems to think he is. A surprising number of recognizable stars, real talent, in a movie you probably didn't even realize existed.

Great performance from Joaquin Phoenix. This movie makes me wonder how much shady stuff actually happens on overseas military bases, that never ends up getting reported...

A weird movie where every time you are about to like someone you are quickly reminded that everyone in the story is basically terrible. It had some good scenes, and I admired what it was trying to do. It just didn't really work all that well for me.

Film must be good when country with a massive movie industry won't accept to show it. In some means movie was overshooting, like when some building was blown up and beetle crushed. Nevertheless, its a good movie.
