What really makes this film work is the lead performance by Zoey Deutch. Deutch's performance is great. The script has some funny moments and some scenes don't work. Overall I would recommend this film.

The movie is (if I’ve learned anything about Buffalo from this) purposely ugly, but the awful interior lighting and colour grading is often just unpleasant. Luckily there’s a perfectly colourful central performance dragging us along through the ugliness, engaging us in the seedy world of the film with an energy that all but overcomes it. Its quickness and chaos carry interest, but also diminish any humanizing effect: Peg remains amusingly incorrigible but also curiously immoral to the end.

Deutch is a dynamo, eating up every scene with the fervor of a Buffalonian going at a plate of wings, perfecting the compelling Peg in all her manic suit, sneaker, and half-bun glory (the details are just delicious-see the long socks+high heels; sign-tap leaving prison). Fortunately, the film doesn't fumble its fantastic lead, serving up a simple and steady crime-dramedy script with just the right amount of good feels and directorial spice (the slow motion run across town was a great intro).

I especially enjoyed Zoey Deutch's spunky performances and her overall portrayal of the character. She was an audacious and gutsy lead character. All performance seemed pretty much spot on. The story was engaging and entertaining. I didn't notice any wasted moments. I can easily recommend this movie, mostly due to smart writing, good direction, fun performances, and excellent production quality. I am encouraged to look into the other movies with Zoey Deutch, Tanya Wexler, and Brian Sacca.

Buffaloed follows in the stylistic footsteps of The Big Short (4th-wall breaking pieces-to-camera) in an attempt to engage with the immoralities of debt-collecting; it doesn't work nearly as well. The film seemed sluggishly paced, packed with despicable characters that fail to garner sympathy. The sleazy males and constant in-your-nose sexism that aims to separate bad from worse is a cheap trick that becomes tired quickly. Deutch delivers a decent performance in an otherwise unremarkable film.

It appears I'm a pretty big fan of Zoey Deutch because every time I see one of her movies I note how great she is. It's not that she puts in real emotional work most of the time, she's just incredibly charming in the roles I've seen her in. And that really counts because this movie, like some others, isn't really a GREAT flick, but she makes it entertaining. Her energy drives this. Otherwise it's pretty well written but not substantial. Some of her dialogue is witty.
