Sometimes praise ought to be due to thought-provoking sideline films that defy mainstream and go for the throat in originality. Welcome to William Friedkin's ultimate disaster "Bug," a metaphorical sting that grows increasingly bizarre, chaotic and aggravating. The characters are so much in another world that we cannot get in on the depravity or feel scared by its stupidity. While the acting is solid, this should've stayed a tense play; as a movie, despite its dare to be different, it's bad.

What the hell did I just watch? And why do I want to watch it again?? For a film that is so tough to take seriously (I laughed a LOT), it sure manages to get under your skin. I couldn't stop thinking about this film for days after seeing it. I went in expecting a creepy-crawly horror film, but what I got was far more unnerving. Michael Shannon gives a superlative performance, and largely carries the film on his shoulders. Laughable, sure, but a slow descent into madness that sticks with you.

A frightening downward spiral into paranoia, physical mutilation and madness. Long takes and a believeable main cast help sell the on paper flimsy sounding concept. Will leave you exhausted and uncomfortable.

Interesting and effective exploration of paranoia and of the development and contagiousness of irrational ideas. While most of what the characters believe is clearly delusional, the film also seems to assert that the ubiquity of surveillance and the machine-like character of contemporary society tend to foster anxiety and fear. Filled with subtle "clues", most of which are probably deliberate red herrings. Also notable: a rare instance of a long dialogue scene with a clothed woman and naked man.

I completely understand why some might hate 'Bug'. It goes some crazy places in the second half. But there's a freshness to that and I was impressed. Shannon and Judd are both on fire.

With nearly every film, Friedkin elevates the disturbing, unnatural qualities of human crisis beyond the frame of conventional thrillers, and as usual, it's all the more gut-wrenching for the nuanced drama he sets in motion at the start. His knack for realistic character work is of more use than ever exploring the complicated personalities and mental issues at play, and even when it devolves into caricature, it's far past the point of needing suspension of disbelief to sustain the horror.

I watched this knowing nothing about it and was blown away. Phenomenal character work both on a writing and acting level, Judd and Shannon are both incredible. A great slow burn contained thriller with excellent camera work and the best use of a broken 180 degree line I've ever seen.

The first hour was great. both leads give excellent performances, which, combined with the set design, really feels like a glimpse into their downtrodden slice of reality rather than actors playing parts. The interactions between them were just the right kind of awkward to make the things both sympathetic and unsettling. But the unsettling moments eventually take over the entire film. The final half hour or so got really tedious for me because it throws that humanity away for shock value.

Based on Tracy Letts play, Bug is a frightening psychological horror featuring brilliant performances from Ashley Judd as an out-of-luck waitress haunted by her ex-con husband and her emotional demons and Michael Shannon, reprising his stage role, as a delusional soldier who takes her into his world of conspiracy, paranoia, and seclusion. Friedken captures their mental scars in minimalist fashion, using subtle framing and understated dialogue rather than cheap parlor tricks and over editing.

Bug is either a movie about the infestation of delusion among psychological damaged individuals, or a thriller about a man on the run from the government after being experimented on for a number of years. Regardless of the way you interpret it, this is one heck of an experience, and is something you should absolutely give an opportunity, unless you're someone who hates ambiguity. It's not a true horror film, but despite not being true to its marketing, it's definitely worth watching.

A stark and intense look at isolation and paranoia presented in one of the most remarkable films I've ever seen. Michael Shannon and Ashley Judd are sublime in their roles, and the result is a destructive masterpiece made by a master in William Friedkin. One of my favourites.

You could tell this was meant to be a theater play. The whole film depends on the outstanding acting performances of the two leads. And for two thirds of the film, it holds the viewer dumbstruck by its intensity. However, the third act gives away to a very formulaic "descent into madness".

Scarier than The Exorcist, but also more exhausting. Ashley Judd's is the first nudity a film has shown me in a long time that I've actually wanted to see, though her numerous upskirts are never sexualized. I could've gone for an unobstructed Michael Shannon cock shot though

A movie that literally has you wondering what will happen next for its entire ride. And I'm not sure if thats a good thing or not. And I don't think the movie wants you to know that either. Its full of questions that are left to your mind to be answered and I'm still trying to decide whether I like that or not. The one thing that cannot be taken from this movie is it's superb acting.

Paranoia 101. Not as masterful as Polanski's Repulsion, but solid enough to stand out from contemporary horror films. It works interestingly, when put together with real conspiracy theories. What if that the was truth? It is so easy to make people look crazy.

A good play shouldn't seem like a play when it's made into a film. This movie is obviously a converted play, from Tracy Letts and Exorcist director William Friedkin. The claustrophobia angle is well-produced, but the movie runs out of things to do after a while and ultimately falls flat.

Shannon is thrillingly intense in this adaptation of a Tracy Letts play about a couple of people on the edge of society mentally melting down in a seedy hotel room. Judd is equally strong, providing a bracing reminder that she can be a fiercely dedicated actor when there's grit built into the role. The invitation to overstatement built into the piece sometimes compromises its effectiveness, but there's something undeniably exciting about watching acting work that is so brutally fearless.

It's not perfect [haha], it really is NOT perfect, but is so freakin' crazy that I couldn't not love it. Judd's performance wasn't too good, mainly because she probably thought it was just too weird, and didn't believe in the project. On the other hand Shannon... OH YEA !!!!!!!!

Haunts you & grows in memory. Recall it more clearly & positively than many much bigger, more lauded pics. A hidden gem. REWATCHED: As brilliant as remembered. A serious head f*ck. Not fun but so, so good. Script, direction, Judd, Shannon, Connick all EXCELLENT. Without spoilers hard 2 explain fully why but it is masterful & if U have any related experience is very authentic (if necessarily somewhat accelerated). More theatrical than filmic. WARNING! : abuse/domestic violence, paranoia triggers.

The way Shannon leads Judd into saying the answers he wants to hear -- the answers he has already convinced himself of being fact -- is perhaps the most unsettling part of Friedkin's phenomenal chamber horror piece... This is exactly how propagation of false & irrational beliefs occurs, and it is something we've seen more of with the saturation of social media than at any other point in our lives. Brilliant film, brilliant performances. Friedkin and Letts are a match made in heaven.

Pretty ahead of it’s time in my opinion, simply for the fact that if something like this came out today, it’d probably be a hit. I can’t imagine anyone else playing either of these roles quite so well though. Shannon is phenomenal as always, but Judd is almost as good. I was hoping for a horror movie about bugs, but I ended up liking the movie for what it was. Goes to show that all you need to make a good movie is a good script and capable actors. Not for everyone, but I dug it.
