A wonderful concept by Parker, which he masterfully turns into brilliant family entertainment which can be enjoyed on so many levels; Watching kids play "adults", watching them have so much fun, trying to be tough, the witty dialog ... However, a musical succeeds on its music and I have to say the songs, while being a little quirky, are nonetheless really catchy. Interesting to see some cast members who went on to fame and fortune, whilst others did nothing more. Just great stuff.

While I definitely will consider showing this to my kids some day (that is, if I'm gonna have any), I can't really mark it as a particularly "great" film. I have a lot of respect for the project, and I suppose Parker accomplishes his intentions. Some of the songs were terrible, which a kid won't mind, but I do. Because I am adult.

An endearing musical-crime-comedy, in which all parts are performed by children. Jodie Foster as a chid is a marvel and the concept is cute, but as in every great musical, what really elevates it are the songs, which to me are unforgettable.

Paul Williams drenched violence. If they weren't shooting each other with whipped cream Bugsy Malone would be the most heinous gangster film bloodbath finale we still talk of in hushed tones It is insane this exists.

The gimmick is so ridiculous and overbearing that I didn't have much hope after the first 10 minutes. The lip syncing on the songs is horrid. But it slowly builds up to a fun little film once you get used to all the child acting.

Weird and fascinating, I regret not having a chance to see it as a kid - thanks to the scaled-down sets and pedal cars it feels a best children game ever and gives an impression of a giant doll house. However, the story is strong enough to support a normal grown-up film, and the children's acting adequate enough to forget at times it's just a make-believe. Were grown-ups cast, it would become a solid gangster film - as is, it's a one of a kind curiosity free to various interpretations.

I found out that Bugsy Malone was and still is a wonderful film. Me and my parents was supposed to go and see " Bröderna Lejonhjärta". I was about to become 11 years oldage in a few weeks time and that film had 11 years as age limit. I was fortunate as me and my mother went on to see Bugsy Malone this gem of a film. It is like a gangster filmfrom the 1930's but with child-actors instead and when they should fire real bullets they fire whipped cream or possibly soft ice cream. I highly recommed

Cute, weird, and unforgettable, "cult" written all over it thanks to its irreplicable gimmick. The songs aren't excellent in and of themselves ("Tomorrow" possibly excepted) but they serve the function they're supposed to, and are as indispensably important to the film's likability as the child actors are. Gets a little rote once the meta gags (splurge guns, pedal cars, weird vocal dubs, etc.) stop being funny.

The problem is that the majority of these kids can't act. They could probably get by in a kids film, but the gangster plot is played surprisingly straight resulting in these children reciting a bunch of lines they can't relate to. The plot is really really simple, the kids can't act, and the movie is largely a painful bore.

Parker's first film is a unique curiosity that nicely captures the mood of the 1920s even with its cast made up solely of children, with good sets and fun wiseguy dialogue. The songs are pleasant, the acting's mostly good, and the use of the splurge guns and pedal cars really adds to the already immense charm.

Hard to evaluate this audacious, distinctive one-off. Think of it, perhaps, is as a high-caliber high school version of a grown-up musical. The songs are terrific, although not uniformly so, and the acting is good considering the limited experience of the cast. The largest disappointment is that every single one of the songs is dubbed. The choice of neutering the violence (cream puffs for bullets) while retaining direct, if often subtle, female sexuality may be off-putting to modern audiences.
