I would have rated this higher if it weren't for the usually awesome Annette Bening going way over the top trying to be an amalgamation of Marie Windsor, Audrey Totter and Ann Savage. It just felt like a bad B-movie Noir at times when she was onscreen. The parts where Beatty is playing the heavy are fantastic, he does a great job.

Beatty's cartoonish portrayal of the Hollywood-thug Bugsy Siegel is entertaining, but lacks the authenticity or punch to make this very compelling. Instead, Bening does most of the heavy lifting and serves as the better half of some great chemistry between the two. Still, the era is wonderfully depicted and supporting cast is chalk full of talent.

Extremely quirky film with its own brand of comedy. Beatty helps bring a fascinating character to life.

Toback as director would've given it more fire, but the crystaline machismo of his dialogue remains, and Beatty & Bening sizzle. It's like Wilder meets Tarantino

Pretty much the last movie Warren Beatty made that was critically or commercially successful, and that makes sense, as it's a well-rounded and engaging crowdpleaser about a fascinating individual. Beatty's vanity makes him a perfect fit for the preening Siegel, what with his movie-starring, Mussolini-killing delusions of grandeur. Toback's script is snappy, with plenty of great character details for Siegel, like a scene where he stops kicking a man on the ground to gaze at his own reflection.

2/10 oscars. it should have won more. the period is expressed masterfully. a great movie from an acclaimed director and all-star cast.

Toback transformed Bugsy into a by-product of his own imagination: a vain self absorbed man driven by romantic obsessions that led to his inevitable decline. The decision to play his downfall in a tragic register was perhaps questionable, but Levinson's often criticised high gloss style actually reflects the gangster's suave persona, and Beatty was ideally cast in a role that really exploits his screen magnetism. Toback's lines are sharply penned, and the era seems faithfully recreated.

Ignoring the extreme liberties it takes on the real person, this is a middling drama. The film takes its liberties to attempt to make Bugsy redeemable with the utterly pointless Mussolini plotline and framing his character as some overly optimistic romantic which just leads me to rolling my eyes given its contrast to his negative traits aren't given nearly as much weight. The whole thing looks so cheap and boring adding onto the eyerolling characterization of the supporting cast.

you know i liked it because its a true story and offers some insight into a time in history that is long gone but besides that its kind of garbage. They almost try to glamorize bugsy but at the same time make him come off as an annoying character. Also im tired of seeing gangster movies where the woman is their downfall, these guys obviously never heard of M.O.B. On top of that its a movie about bugsy, you almost think that the directors are honoring him but then they disrespect him by naming it

Better than its reputation. Beatty's sudden outbreaks of violence are terrifying, and Bening is a match for him.

Intriguing drama about the beginnings of Las Vegas. A little bland - nothing more than a biopic. But still, well done.

A bit of an odd one this, as I enjoyed it but probably not the way it was intended to be. Warren Beatty is just so bad in this he's hilarious. I can't imagine this was intended but his performance proves to be really entertaining. While the film is otherwise well made, the tale of Ben Siegel's final years and his vision for creating Las Vegas is reasonably bland, so Beatty's portrayal of Bugsy as a crazy violent dreamer out of touch with the real world makes it worth watching.

A decent outing. Warren Beatty is good, but not great as always and Elliot Gould is in this movie. You never see Elliot Gould in a movie.

Ten, because it's not true. Bugsy Seigel did not start Las Vegas, he had very little to do with Vegas, was only there a few months. The movie is misleading.

Not just another gangster picture, as some had feared. James Toback`s sparkling script as interpreted by director Barry Levinson and producer-star Warren Beatty is both a rare love story between equals and a portrait of a dreamer.

Fairly mundane potrayal of mobster Bugsy Siegel and his part in the miraculous growth of Las Vegas. Bening plays her part very well. I found myself irritated by the film's careless disregard for the chronology of WW2!

Pacing is slow at times. There are some interesting bits of history here that aren't fleshed out enough. Feels like 3 different movies mashed up. 1991 Oscar snubs: Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Fishbourne, and Val Kilmer.

I honestly feel this was a bit underrated even if the latter stages of the film were not as good. Also, the added scenes in the director's cut are horrendous. The scene where Bening and Beatty fight over the pistol in the dark house felt a bit saturated and cheesy. The era was captured beautifully and Beatty's charismatic performance took it up one notch.

I would love to see a serious movie about the historical mobsters portrayed here, who led truly fascinating lives, but "Bugsy" does not deliver the goods. There is some semblance of historicity in the plot outline, but the treatment is smirky and unrealistic, and Levinson's directing is plasticky. Worst of all is the casting of Warren Beatty as Siegel. A formidable supporting cast serves to emphasize how ridiculously unconvincing he is.

Stylishly scattered, Bugsy offers cinematic homage to the infamous underworld legend, chiefly through a magnetic performance from Warren Beatty in the title role.

Benning is very good at making me hate her character. Beatty's Siegel is obsessive, obnoxious, and charming all at once, and can get whipped into a frenzy in little time. All of the performances are enjoyable. I didn't know anything about Siegel and the birth of Las Vegas coming in, so it's a treat to learn a bit about that.
