Extremely engaging documentary about one of my favorite writers ever. Bukowski had a tough shell but he had such a beautiful and vulnerable core. Everything Bukowski says seems to get better and better as the film progresses.

-5 points for Bono.

Probably the most condensed use of archive footage in a biographical film. At a certain point it becomes too much with the "he's the best poet since Whitman", but if you can abstain from throwing things at the screen when Bono decides to give his opinion on things, there is definitely some (film) poetry there.

FANTASTIC documentary with great footage of one of my heroes. Love it. It covers all of his novels and goes into great length on each subject.

"Its power springs from the director's shifting between fawning stories from long-time acquaintances and the scraggly, take-it-or-leave-it surliness of Bukowski himself." - Nick Schager

What a crazy old bastard. The film really engages a large group of people who all knew Bukowski in their own way thus creating a very nice objective view of who he was as a person. It was great to see Penn and Waits in their as well. If you're a fan, or just appreciate backgrounds of writers in general, then definitely check it out.

Great documentary, I think it really makes a good Bukowski's portrait from how his life went, his writing, hobbies and overall his character which you can see trough the interviews. If you have read the books you can visualize the stories in the books, also a very well chosen title. Some interviews where a bit too much though.

watching a Bukowski interview or poetry reading is always good, and it's where all the feeling from this documentary comes from. Otherwise, there's a chronological tale of how he came to be, accolades from celebrities that idealised him, and amusing or distressing anecdotes from friends and family members.
