This movie is built around an almost infallible "guy test." When McQueen realizes he's being tailed and disappears, only to reappear behind his shadow, a guy is going to show physical signs of being excited, some would use the word aroused by the prospect of the chase that is to come. If you are unmoved by said event, you are a lady. Nothing wrong with that though. I love ladies.

This movie is probably the proto-Dirty Harry movie, with McQueen portraying a "take-no-prisoners" cop, although he only uses his gun at the end of the movie. I borrowed the dvd from one of my housemates, who is a nearly-60-year-old Australian and remembers seeing it on the big screen back in the 1960s. The car chase scene totally blew everyone away, then. I like the fact that the movie handles the story in a realistic way, without turning Bullitt into a smart-ass cop full of one-liners.

Steve McQueen is the epitome of cool. The entire love interest subplot could've been done without, it adds nothing at all to the movie other than a nice pair of legs (McQueen).

Manages to avoid the typical right-wing Manichaeist fantasizing of the "cop-playing-by-his-own-rules" subgenre. Unfortunately, it's a film undone by its own awesomeness. Nothing could top the incredible car chase in the second act, and its finale seemed anticlimactic by comparison.

A brilliant (de?)construction of the "rogue cop" subgenre. Like Bullitt the character, Bullitt the film plays by its own rules, getting rid of pesky things like every-10-page action set pieces. Yes, it has action scenes - great ones - but it has them when it serves the story. One of the highest moments of tension comes when the cops stare at a 1960's "fax" machine printing a photo. Now THAT'S a police procedural.

Bursting with style and late 60's chic, with McQueen probably as enigmatic and charismatic as at any other point in his career. "Bullitt" is a lot of fun, with that great chase scene, it rightly deserves its status as a style classic. That said the plot is wafer thin, and so much time is wasted with postering and posing that its quite clear this movie could have been less than an hour long! Pacing issues aside, a fun watch.

Yeah, it's cool car chase, but all my expectations were building towards this scene, because the rest of the film failed in every other aspect. I don't know why, but I kind of imagined that it could keep the film from falling down an endless pit of insufferable boredom. 15 for the car-chase-motors-making-music-scene - 15 for Steve McQueen. What a bore.

Terrific. This flick is famous for its car chase through the streets of San Francisco. What makes it stand out today, however, are its 60s-styled cool and the moody, deliberately paced suspense. And Steve McQueen, obviously.

Standard run-of-the-mill police story, with a moderately entertaining car chase scene in the middle. Many scenes are unnecessarily drawn out, there are quite a few pointless characters (Bullitt's girlfriend), and some scenes seem to serve no purpose at all, making this film much more boring than it could have been. Forgettable.

I reconize the style, the realism, some good scenes, the influence in other movies... but I found it quite dissapointing. Of course, the car chase is nice and I specially like the simplicity, it's rude, without music or big effects, and still great sequence because it's direct and natural, and that's not an easy thing to do. Like that, there're some moments here and there, but as a whole I didn't found the movie that great.

This is a great example of how a lack of ambiance and sound effects can really ruin a film. Then again, there wasn't exactly a lot going on with the plot either. One great car-chase scene isn't enough to make an otherwise boring movie any better.

It feels strange to recommend a movie based solely on a single scene. But here we are. The car chase scene is remarkable, and it trumps every other aspect of the movie. McQueen is decent, but while others call him cool, to me to he comes across sleepy and uninterested. Vaughn is good but not as spectacular as many make him out to be. The plot held my interest, but just barely. But man, it's all about that car chase...

It is common knowledge that people flock to Bullitt for McQueen and a car chase. Both of these things are great, but the remaining film is something worth watching as well. Sure, the plot isn't anything to praise, but its realism and grit is notable. Add that the film is beautifully shot and blocked and it is clear to see why Bullitt has stood the test of time.

OK, let's be honest here. The plot of Bullitt is not very deep. There's a reason it's remembered for its car chase--there isn't much else memorable about the film. But oh, what a car chase! McQueen does what he can to salvage the plot, but as long as you know he's out to get the bad guys you know what's going on at any given point. Let your mind wander until you hear the screeching of tires and then wake up and pay attention for the cinematic ride of your life.

The iconic chase scene is, of course, the highlight. McQueen is solid as the jaded protagonist, but Vaughn steals the show with his snide and sniveling role. The film is fun, but there were many moments that were motivated by illogical or dumb behavior from the characters, so it's best not to think too hard while watching. Oh, and McQueen's girlfriend is pretty annoying and useless.

A strong candidate for most perfectly cast movie in history. McQueen the RL loner as the title character; Bisset, who had difficulty acting but who looked great, as his girlfriend; Fell and Vaughn sweating themselves in those 60s suits and ties worrying about what their loner hero cop is going to do next... and even the Mustang is exactly the right car. Well-done, exciting action film that's actually gotten better with the years since it's such a time capsule

One of Steve McQueen's more memorable movies. That Mustang was pretty hot stuff when this movie was released. vvvaarrrroooooommmm. Unfortunately, this movie hasn't aged well and some of the chase scenes don't hold up to scrutiny. The Volkswagen that keeps appearing even though it should have been long gone, for example. Fun, tight thriller with the Cooler King being the king of cool, Steve McQueen. While it doesn't add up to much more than the sum of its parts, its parts are plenty fine. You can hardly avoid mentioning the iconic car chase, and a fantastic car chase it is, too. It draws inspiration from THE LINEUP, and really the movie as a whole would be right at home among some of the better police procedural films noir. It also avoids a lot of the "rogue cop" clichés and doesn't feel too predictable.

Peter Yates's gritty, understated police drama has more going on under its surface. It's not just about the case - it's a character study of a laconic, troubled soul with a tough guy exterior who lives in a violent and brutal world. It's depicted as a world full of noise and chaos, which Bullitt blocks out to remain in control and attain justice. Seen through the eyes of his sensitive girlfriend, Cathy, it's quite moving to observe how Bullitt is aware of his situation, yet is unable to change.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I completely lost what was happening with the plot after the car chase (I seriously had no idea why the guy on the plane was running away) and I didn't think it maintained the energy of its first half enough to compensate for my confusion. Yates is often praised for his gritty no nonsense approach to action, but his 'realistic' style feels more like the default style that results from an absence of true skill. Like The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Bullitt is bland, but at least the former was occassionally compelling due to Mitchum being perfectly cast in an impressive mid career role. McQueen's Bullitt is a boring macho stereotype, and despite a few decent, if overhyped, chase sequences the film is poorly paced and lacks excitement.

Bullitt is a movie that deserves to be remembered for its car chase scene, certainly, but also for the rest of the film surrounding it. Its plot is more engaging - both with where it takes us and the political motivations that influence it - than it probably needed to be, the dialogue is interesting, and the other action scenes are impressive in their own right. Bullitt made Hollywood step up its car chase game - and it might be something that some modern filmmakers should go watch again.

Gritty and callous. This thriller excels at offering a steady and consistent pace and tone throughout, where the film doesn't waver even for a second. What complements it superbly is Steve McQueen's solid screen personae. The unforgettable classic Hollywood car chase scene - what a choice of cars; a Mustang and a Dodge Charger - is executed in a textbook-worthy manner. A highly entertaining film from start to finish. Among the best in the genre right along the likes of Dirty Harry.
