The beginning seems promising for naught. Around the halfway mark, over an hour into the film, the actress shows off a truly perfect set of tits; that's the best thing I can say about this. At about 1:30, when most movies end, the plot of "Burning" finally gets going (it decides to be a mystery). Even then it kind of plods. The snide "Ben" is a single brush-stroke, and Jonh-Soo and Hae-Mi are even less than that. Like in "Poetry", there are many attempts at profundity, which fall flat.

At first glance this appears to be a beautifully shot love triangle drama, until slowly but surely the underlying tensions of class struggle, social alienation and male entitlement reach a breaking point. Really manages to capture the mood of Murakami's writing.

This movie's unplaceable atmospheric tension haunts the mind. Because its meaning is so expansive, it feels elusive, but it aims at all the unspoken animosity between the dichotomous classes of modern society as it slowly becomes untethered from civility, rooted in the unique isolation born of today's world. It's so perfectly paced and watchable that it sneaks all this in under your nose, so all you're left with in the aftermath is that feeling of a passionate longing that suddenly empties out.

Technically pretty marvelous: the camera work is very deliberate and creates a great mood, the bass-heavy score is tremendous, the acting is really good and it covers some social issues well. It's an incredibly slow-burn and I'm conflicted: at times there's a reward to the pacing but then it also manages to drag on occasion, simultaneously revealing its secrets too slightly and just right. It's still a great movie, though I wish I could find the same passion for it that others clearly have.

4 September 2018 & An accurate Murakami adaptation: You can't decide whether it's too deep or too superficial, just like books/stories of him. The best part of the film is the first half hour. Then the mystery its created, the paranoia of the character and the place where the director put the audience is definitely not for me.

Enigmatic drama is shot and constructed in such a precise and exacting way that it almost feels suffocating at times; elegant and intriguing but with a coldness and emptiness at its core, this certainly remains watchable for its entire duration, but it's never particularly involving, especially in its sometimes on-the-nose metaphors. However, there is definitely something here and the performers are all terrific, with Yeun particularly impressive as the sinister Ben.

"Burning" is just another installment of a trend of arthouse movies showcasing extreme directorial prowess with a flaccid plot, unnatural dialog, and caricatures rather than characters. While I'll admit freely that the final scene was breathtaking, there was no resolution and Jong-soo was an awkward chore to watch for the majority.

Beginning at the rural sunset scene, the film is masterfully, quietly suspenseful, and every moment is compelling, but there is too much prior to it to allow the film as a whole to be great. The first act is so slow it can hardly be said to build towards the rest, and the masturbatory and sexual angle meant to reveal intimacy (?) between protagonists does anything but, which makes our lead creepy until a creepier man comes along. But from the sunset, the film is unquestionably gripping.

The parallels drawn with the art of pantomime are interesting as the movie seems to draw its strengths from both its mood and that which remains unseen. Both as a character study and a mystery, I remained endlessly fascinated by some of its observations and a plot that peels away its layers ever so slightly. Subsequent viewings are bound to be equally compelling, despite its slow pacing.

Such a slow burning that it takes not only the finale but the sad lead-up to it to reveal a complexity made of status resentment, the extremes of infatuation, and different modes of numbness towards life. I could see this simple story working as a 90s thriller starring Richard Gere mirroring some awkward fool in the lead role, yet Lee's cool ambiguity gives it more class and resonance, if not necessarily punch.

At some point Hae-mi describes pantomime as not trying to imagine the object is there, but to forget the object is not there. Which seems perfectly emblematic for the film. In mysterious hiatuses we recognize the familiar strokes of Murakami (who wrote the short story) and Burning catches his unique literary flavor well - or, at least, how i liked to imagine it when i was big into his books. It’s a little gem that absolutely deserves a rewatch in the future. South Korea looks so good on film!

Quite the slow burn (hurr) and everything is wildly contextualised by the stunning denouement. People may complain about an overuse of ambiguity, as is here, but it works in exploring the finer details of the hero-villain dichotomy, which is done through terrific performances and awesomely understated and perfectly effective directing -- it's intense like it doesn't even know it.

a post-antonioni neo-noir, but tethered to the perspective of a rural neet and would-be novelist (this seems largely a story of his own invention) simmering with class resentment. the screenplay is a mixed bag of clever callbacks/foreshadows and more obvious signifiers, implausible contrivances and genre conventions. the threat, confusion, isolation and bitterness amassed during the slow sink into these deep blues and oranges really linger, though, like "a bass that resonates to the bones".

With calming visuals of the South Korean countryside, the movie starts of as a quiet drama about a guy falling for an old class mate of his, but then takes a gripping dive into paranoia and mystery later in its two hour run time. The slow-burner of the year. Shot by shot the film that best uses perspective in favor of storytelling - Lee's framing is always so precise. The plot is kind of divided into a social chronicle about youth in South Korea - the "Gatsbys" and the unemployed, struggling ones (lead is an aspiring writer yet to finish his first novel). Once the girl disappears and the film enters the thriller mode, it manages to remain enigmatic - the murder is almost a love scene; bass-oriented score is marvelous.

While Burning looks amazing and is atmospheric af, I had a very personal issue with it. Jong-soo and Hae-mi were such classic Murakami characters that it took me out of the experience completely. The passive writer dude and the assertive, mysterious manic pixie dream girl/woman who seduces him gave me the hives in the theater. But you know what? Steven Yeun (of The Walking Dead) was amaaaze in this. Really loved his performance.

Fantastic. Lee is doing a great deal here in his filmmaking to highlight the (potential?) subjectivity of the narrative. Told from a writer's perspective, the film strikes me as being very much about the possibility of truly knowing others, and the mysteries that result from our isolation. Of course, there's also much here about class difference and how women function in society as well. Wonderfully complex film from one of my favorite filmmakers working today.

Yet another film making masterclass from Lee Chang-dong - a director with an exquisite eye for composition, and an ear for poetic yet natural dialogue that brings the best out of his performers. Lee's blend of obliqueness and directness works seamlessly here in a murder mystery where we're never entirely sure there's even been a murder, and the two halves of South Korean society are brilliantly essayed through the protagonists. The music is very effective too.

This films deals with some deep themes, such as mortality, identity/belonging, jealousy and understanding. Its quite a thoughtful film but there isn't much in the way of a solid plot as such going on, so you may find it rather directionless. Its quite an arty sort of a film, very much about symbolism and with a sort of a philosophical angle to it. I would recommend this film to fans of world cinema, definitely.

The critical flaw of films that rely so much on subtext to provide commentary on misogyny, sanism, and class is that that's all only apparent and makes sense if you already agree with the film. That is, you are anti-misogyny and anti-sanism. If you aren't, you're liable to simply agree with the characters who exhibit these things, and miss the critique altogether. So what's the point of these? And yet, is it possible to avoid falling in love with such deeply compelling commentaries?

Our life it's full of pantomimes, grasping for filling the lack of truth. Masturbation it's a pantomime of love; going out in the same pub with rich people it's a pantomime of equality; burning is a pantomime of killing. Only Ben fills that void, but through killing, thanatos winning over eros. Burning is a story of class gap and existential struggle that leads to a thriller. It catch the existential mistery of Murakami's work, begging to be analyzed in every frame, and it's worth it.

The movie is purposefully cryptic and practically begs you to analyze it, which you can either find frustrating or alluring. I obviously found it the latter. I had read the Murakami short story that the film is based on and they practically took 20-30 pages and built a 140mins film around it. The end result is good. While it extends the story and provides a lot of background, it still keeps the essence and mystery of the story and lefts many of the questions unanswered. Pacing could have been tighter, but it’s a common issue with South Korean cinema. The leads are great and so is the cinematography which displays a different side of South Korea.

It's a quiet, confident, and artistic film. But it is also maddeningly slow and clunky at times. And nothing gets resolved, so the time investment feels like a waste, on the surface. But there is something more going on with this movie, even though I can't put my finger on it.
