Oliver Reed and Karen Black is one couple that I would not want to have dinner with. The part where Reed tries to drown his own son is amazing.

Had some good, creepy ideas, but something about the way this one was made sucks the life out of it faster than it did to poor ol' Aunt Elizabeth. And working on this film must have been so traumatic for Oliver Reed - did you see how many times he was scared shirtless?

The film moves at a slow deliberate pace and isn't the most amazing of horror films, but I think it had the atmosphere down and I thought the acting was pretty good. I found the ending particularly good. If this was paced better with a few more good scenes, this probably would have been a decent film. As it is, this film is mostly unremarkable save for a few things.

Watching reed and black get weirder and nastier as the film progressed and the house gradually restoring itself mysteriously were both unique highlights. The pool scene was fantastic wow. Unfortunately not enough happens...the film slowly seethes its way to its conclusion(which i loved...violent and quietly eerie) but that slow slow burn makes for sleepy watching. I love haunted house films, this one could have been great if not for the molasses pace

Pretty well made, reasonably creepy, if a bit slow. The cast is good value for money, even if Reed feels the need to pop his top off at every opportunity. It had shades of The Haunting, and some of it seemed echoed in The Shining. It perhaps just needed to get its point across a bit more effectively. Still, worth a watch, especially for Reed/Black/Davis fans. Oh, and Meredith is a hoot here.

What a cast. The grandfather to The Shinning, Burnt Offerings a methodically paced sense of dread. Nothing all that bad happens until the chilling conclusion, but the craft on display is quite something.

This terrified my brother and I watching at home as kids, and I still don't want to watch this alone! Oliver Reed is great in this.

Rather creepy underrated haunted house gem that in some ways goes beyond the standard cliches for the genre. Some of the really interesting camera work makes me wonder if Sam Rami saw this before making The Evil Dead. And other parts remind me of The Shining, although I'm not sure if Kubrick was inspired by this movie when he made his legendary horror film. I rather liked how it slowly builds up its creepiness, leading to a rather unforgettable climax.

It's a bit if a slow one but its not awful. Oliver Reed following some sort of Gremlin like rule where everytime his character gets wet he turns into an evil asshole. Keep him away from that pool!

I'd like to rate this higher b/c it's so technically well made & the opening's so unique as it evokes the feeling that something is wrong - not just subtly - but indirectly by being amusing. The problem's that the payoff of too many redundant scenes of the family coming apart is so unsatisfying. The whole film- strangely for Dan Curtis - seems built on inscrutable metaphors. Why do plants start growing? Why does dad suffer & mom thrive? How do his dreams tie in? & where's mom's foto at the end?

Pretty damn scary. If you can get your hands on a copy of Robert Marasco's original book (by the same title), then read it before watching the show; compare.

I loved this. As others have pointed out, it's a slower film, but goddamn does it have some fantastic performances and terrifying scenes (the two in the pool are stand-outs). I mean, I'd watch Oliver Reed read the phonebook so I might be biased.

Spooky to be sure. And (spoiler) a non-happy ending. But badly acted, badly directed, predictably written & directed. Could have been far better in capable hands.

Not sure which was creepier: the weird family that movies out of the house or the normal bickering, abusive one that moves in.
