I loved everything about this film, except for the montages. I thought they went on just a little bit too long. Aside from that this movie is great. Redford and Newman are both fantastic as the likable, hilarious outlaws. One of the best westerns for sure.

A very fun, fast paced, good time. I love the chemistry between Newman and Redford and the writing is top notch, Goldman could really write a script. Didn't care too much for the music choices (raindrops keep fallin on my head? wtf?) but I thought the montages were a clever way to move the characters forward in a short amount of time. Deserves its place on all the best westerns and best movie lists, awesome film.

Don’t remember why I loved this 25 years ago, I only know I found this second watch very slowly paced, repetitive, & ultimately sort of meaningless with glaring plot holes (how did the 2 leads get back to Etta on foot? How exactly do yanqui banditos like these 3 hide from the South American authorities?). I do remember reading that the posse chasing them symbolized modernity & perhaps this is all an allegory for the death of the Western, but maybe I need to be older to appreciate the loss.

Pointless and plodding. A boring western made seemingly so Newman could mug at the camera for 90 minutes. Newman and Redford fans might like this, but I can't see how any western fans would. The Sting is a million times better than this and features the same two lead actors.

The chemisty between Redford and Newman is second to none. While for the most part it is a light-hearted Western it does have some serious moments. Basically the perfect mix between comedy and tragedy in the Old West.

Starts off great, but as the film went on I starting losing interest in everything except for the dialogue exchanged between Newman and Redford. That one aspect made it all worth it, but I still wish the rest of the film was more interesting. And I thought that the music was downright awful at times.

Not the standard western I was expecting. There is great chemistry between the leads, and the smart script is excellent. I now know where LaFors in Mallrats comes from, as well as about a thousand other references. Nicely shot and paced, with great use of location.

Had this been different casting I think the whole thing would have been a wash. Redford and Newman are perfect in their own roles and with each other. The score feels a little out of place at times but other than that I can't think of anything bad to say.

I don't know why I don't like this more than I do... maybe because it's a smirky, self-amused western from a time when Peckinpah was already making the harsh, reflective revisionist westerns that eschewed entertainment in favor of thoughtful realism... or maybe it's because George Roy Hill would later use Redford and Newman again for The Sting which is so much better than this (as usual, it's the writing that makes the difference).

*spoiler* The script (comedy) strikes me as at cross-purposes with the story (tragedy), and I realize that might be the point. The problem I have is that while there are great exchanges of dialogue, classic scenes, and a strong sense of place, the film ultimately isn't honest about its two "adventurers." The tragedy here is not their deaths, but rather that they carry their smart-ass, wise-cracking ways to the grave. Fun, but confused.

Too hip for its own good, and rather clumsily directed, but Newman, Redford and Ross are charming, and Goldman's screenplay has many good lines. It loses points for the "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on my Head" sequence--one of the most cloying bits ever in any movie, let alone a movie as self-consciously "hip" as this one.

I don't understand why this film is famous. Drags horribly from start to finish, with multiple overlong and pointless montages and sequences of sheer randomness. At no point could I find a reason to care what happens to the main characters, who rob poor people and maim or kill working stiffs. Gave it a few points for some decent wilderness shots but that's the only positive thing I could find to say about this film.

Newman and Redford have some of the easiest chemistry you'll ever see onscreen, immediately charming and fully believable. There's plenty of laughs and exciting moments, not to mention the stylish cinematography and iconic ending. The "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" montage is kind of laughable, but everything else is classic Western.

Hill made some odd choices, some good and some not so good, but on the whole this is a competent and quite fun western. Paul Newman and Robert Redford are both great, and the relationship between their characters is both ambiguous and heartfelt at the same time. The movie also has one of the best explosion scenes I've ever seen.

What people don't realize is that this movie is about nothing other than Butch and Sundance. It's not about America, the West, the Western, legends, love, hate, freedom, death, sex, crime or guns. It's about Newman and Redford. As such, it functions more as a forerunner to movies like Lethal Weapon and Shanghai Noon than as anything definitive or artful.

This film would no doubt have been a fun ride no matter who played the lead roles, but it's Newman and Redford who make it great and give it so much pathos. On the surface it seems undeniable that the film paints a highly romanticized picture of the Old West, so it's surprising to find that so much of what the film depicts actually happened. Extraordinary stories with extraordinary actors make for extraordinary movies.

Paul Newman and Robert Redford are pretty good, but the movie feels a lot more like a series of vignettes than it does a coherent narrative, even though the film does have one, and I didn't really feel any compulsion to see what happened next. Fun, somewhat poignant, but overall it didn't grab me. Perhaps this can go on the reappraisal list later.

Patchy. Newman and Redford are great to start with, but the smart-aleck quips begin to wear thin after a little while. I wished they'd just stop and have a normal conversation. The plot feels thin, too, and lags heavily in the middle section. There's a perfunctory attempt at thematic depth near the end (when they attempt to guard the payroll), but to be honest I was fairly bored by then.

The ending broke my heart when I was a kid, but now the characters or the story didn't seem that deep to me. Entertaining, non-violent western, where criminals are heroes and you don't even start questioning their morality.

I hate Westerns. I dozed a lot, but, is it me or did they sneak out the back of a whorehouse 6 or 10 or 20 times? A lot of boring shootouts, a lot of boring robberies, a lot of boring time spent between robberies riding a bicycle around a farmhouse to the tune of "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head". What a joke. People are saying it has a "great ending". I just finished watching it a half hour ago and don't remember the ending. Like, no recollection. At all. I was just happy to see the credits.

Gripping in the ringwraith-type pursuit to Conrad L. Hall's landscape-porn, which is furtively brushed aside with a sepia photo montage. The platonic man-love is a joy, but ending with the adjunct fantasy-slaying of a million policeman and soldiers didn't fit their lovable scamp image--as Butch and Sundance pick them off one-by-one, two-by-two. I hated them by the end.

Perhaps the earliest of the New Hollywood films to perfect the aesthetic approach and anti-establishment worldview in an, at times, moving, beautiful, and occasionally chaotic compendium of joy. Its lack of narrative tightness is part of its charm, but could turn some people off. Weaknesses outside of that are almost made up for by Newman and Redford, who knock it out of the park because of course they do. It's tough to think of anything I actually dislike about the film.

This is first and foremost a lot of fun. Perhaps the best kind of Western; one that does not take itself too seriously. Newman, Redford and Ross make a believable and likeable trio of carefree bandits. The music is superb and constantly reminds the viewer that this is no traditional Western, but at the same a film that stays true to the very tradition of the West and its portrayal in films of the past.

Follows a similar arc as Bonnie and Clyde, but the end lacks the same amount of oomph. That's probably due to the comic nature of the whole thing. Also, the "Raindrops are Falling on My Head" part was pure cheese, but in a good way.

When the movie was first screened for a major audience, director George Roy Hill was worried that the movie was too funny. "They laughed at my tragedy" he said. He then cut some of the lighter scenes, but that still remains the movies biggest flaw. It gets to caught up in Paul Newman clowning around. However, Redford - the real star of this movie - balances him out and at a bigger scale, the movie is still very good.

I can't say this one was one of my favorites, as have been many of my most recent watches. Butch Cassidy sports some of the most lovable characters and some awesome performances from it's 2 leads, but I feel as though it suffers in script. It seemed just a little too wishy-washy on tone. That being said, direction is incredible as well as the acting.

There's a couple goofy soundtrack choices and montages that draw it out, but Roy Hill manages to keep the film stylish and very well shot. An iconic ending wraps it all up and solidifies Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid as a classic western that truly deserves the title.

In all of the genres I've seen used to describe this on an array of different forums, not a single one has yet to describe it as I would - a straight up comedy. Newman and Redford play a couple of charmers readily equipped with an endless supply of witty one liners. I even enjoyed the stupid bicycle montage.

I was expecting an ordinary western, I've got one of the best buddy movies instead. The chemistry between the characters is so amazing, 20 minutes into the movie I was completely involved in their story and I even forgot to pay attention how beautiful Hall's cinematography is. What I really like about this movie is how the relationships between Redford's, Newman's and Ross' characters never went into the boring whose-chick-are-you-actually cliche and always stayed true to the point of the movie.

Amazing how differently you can experience a film at different times. The first time I saw it I wasn't really impressed. But the second time... very enjoyable movie with great cinematography and excellent and very quotable humor. Also amazing performances from Redford and especially Newman. I really enjoyed the musical parts with Newman on the bike, and the photography part where they go to Bolivia, which provide very original and lighthearted breaks in the film. Great watch!

I'm generally not a western fan, but this is shaking out to be my favourite one. I mean, everybody must know this, but I'll repeat it anyways. The chase sequence. The first half of the movie. It never break from the lads' point of view. No shots are fired (at humans,) and the chasers never get closer than specs on the horizon, and yet it's suspenseful as shit.

A classic, great movie. Of course the stars are much older now, but back in '69 this was a fantastic movie. Still enjoyable and a great story after (hard to believe) nearly 40 years.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is without doubt one of the coolest and funnest Westerns of all time. Paul Newman & Robert Redford are simply sensational together. The chemistry and humour between them make for one of the most iconic pairings of all time. They carry the film effortlessly and they have an equal share of moments and importance. The script is fantastic, the comic timing is perfection and there's so many cool and humorously quotable one liners. There's so much fun to be had here.

Stylishly produced and well acted. This has an unexpected charm and there are real glimpses into the characters. Plenty of action and a beautiful score to provide a charming counterpoint to the unfolding drama. Bright and dark in parts with a memorable ending that should not be missed.

what a riot! i didn't know what to think going into this film, but i was so pleasantly surprised by how fun and well-written it was. goldman deserves all his accolades and more. i loved everything about this film, from the witty, hilarious dialogue to the precise characterizations to the way it turned the western genre on its head without compromising the integrity of the film. redford and newman are born stars and this film proves that without a doubt.

We all know Newman and Redford are what make this movie so watchable, there's not even a point in exploring this well-tread ground. As a western, it's pretty light-hearted, which might explain my lighter score, but the script is fun and the cinematography is the work of a master. Perhaps it's a case of Classic Conundrum: you put an appallingly famous film on hold for so long, you might be underwhelmed when you finally see it. I should've watched it years ago.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is decently entertaining and funny (although at times I thought it tried too hard to be too clever). Redford and Newman feed off each other perfectly. The story is just ok IMO. I didn't quite like it as much as my PSI would suggest, but it is decent.
