Butterfly Sword

Frenetic wire fu action, this is one of the better examples of the new wave wuxia films of the early 90s.

Even though I am a fan of the genre, I hated the silly fighting scenes, flying whirlwinds, twirling and ridiculous fight sequences chopped to bits. The story has too much nonsense and supernatural magic to be enjoyable. Some of the sound effects were also very repetitive. Many humorous costumes but far too much of this was stupid, corny, cheesy or badly edited.

Opens with a face being ripped off and wuxia hijinks causing humans to explode into dusty messes and then Michelle Yeoh tells Tony Leung he's got a small organ while Donny Yen pathetically creeps on her and from there it. does. not. stop. There's gorgeous wuxia, normal wuxia, crazy wuxia, then there's stuff like this full of bloody splatter and soccer ball fights and weird humor and wait what's going on plotting that just reveals the movie to actually be from another world

Ridiculous 90s kung-fu with a damn fine cast.
