CBGB follows the story of Hilly Kristal's New York club from its conceit as a venue for Country, Bluegrass and Blues (CBGB) to what it ultimately became: the birthplace of underground rock 'n roll and punk. When Kristal had difficulty booking country bands in his club on the Bowery he opened his doors to other kinds of rock music. Hilly Kristal ironically became known as the godfather of punk giving a chance to such bands as Blondie, Television, Ramones, Talking Heads, Dead Boys and The Police. (imdb)

The bathroom was much more disgusting than that portrayed in this film.

Never got to go, but been to many little bars to hear a lot of the future. The film is let down by the stylised comic panels which don't fit and generally aren't funny.

It's fun. Said fun lies mainly in watching the spot-on physical representations of CBGB mainstays like Debbie Harry, Joey Ramone, Lou Reed, et. al. by Malin Akerman, Joel David Moore, Kyle Gallner and the rest. Also, it's great to see Rickman lighten up and deliver such a likable, well-rounded leading man performance. Mainly, though, this is the kind of movie that makes you really want to buy the soundtrack.

More like an after school special than anything without the Tiffani Amber Thiessen.

A good introduction to the lore and the importance of Hilly but something seems to be missing. I can't put my finger on it.

To be fair, it almost takes a certain kind of talent to make the absolute most thoroughly unpunk movie about punk that could possibly exist (and this talent comes, apparently, in the form of the director that brought us such esteemed punk classics as the Kid N Play and Sinbad vehicles Class Act and Houseguest). Of course the only reason anyone in their right mind would bother with this is to drunkenly hate-watch it, but even then it really starts to wear out it's welcome after a while.

Well, it had Alan Rickman in it.

This is an interesting film about the famous CBGB club and the owner of the club. Alan Rickman is great in the lead role. This movie also has a good supporting cast. Overall I would recommend this film.
