Eli Roth is always a little hit or miss, but this one is honestly right down the middle for me. Would I ever watch it again? Probably not. But it was an enjoyable watch on the first go, and honestly I wouldn't not recommend it. It's actually kind of a good time, if you put aside the bad dialogue.

What it seems like happened here is that a competent director decided he liked the incompetence of bad horror movies (read 90s/early 00s teen horror ala I Know What You Did Last Summer or Final Destination) and then decided to make a good bad horror movie, but not a so-bad-it's-good movie, and not a satire or parody either, just bad because it earnestly thinks that's good, and if this review is confusing it's because this movie is too.

SO Roth: it opens with one of the girls telling a kid not to go to college, a kid biting Bert's hand, hillbilly store owner saying that rifle is for black people (in a literal way, though), a sex scene followed by Bert taking a piss. The director creates almost a horror compilation -- blood splatter, young people afraid of touching each other -- but horny and willing to get drunk --, an evil dog that barks, a bunch of angry hillbillies. This is when self-conscious horror really works.

Quite disturbing, and clever. It really sets itself up to be a typical slasher film and then defies all expectations. There is one moment that's entirely too predictable, but otherwise a very fun film.

This is one of the most brilliant horror flicks out there. Despite its self-aware irony, it still manages to deliver rather horrific moments. A lot of people just don't *get* the brilliant reconciliation of self-parody with deadpan seriousness and splatter-gore. Eli Roth touches on the thematics of the voyeur perspective of the whole horror genre, as well as our fascination with the bizarre amalgam of sexuality and gore. This film defines the gore-horror genre.

Love how Eli Roth talks about how he's the realest guy in horror when every film he's made is dogshit, Rob Zombie looks like a genius in comparison. I will say though the leg shaving scene in this was pretty great.

I remember first seeing the trailers for this & thinking it looked so bad. Then I was home on leave from the army & my boyfriend dragged me to go see it in the theater, & it was kinda okay! (maybe because I set my expectations so low). Eventually we bought it on dvd & on second viewing I thought it was not so good. Then he dumped me for an 18 yr old he met on Myspace & left me with this goddamn dvd, while taking the discontinued Sleepaway Camp box set, fucking bastard.

Eli Roth is talented enough, I suppose. This movie could have been a lot better without all the comedy thrown in to take away from the scares. The ball was dropped...the offense recovered the ball...but it was still dropped.

I'd avoided this like the plague, hearing terrible things from people I trust, but Roth's inspired trailer in Grindhouse made me take notice: "Thanksgiving" was lewd, disturbing, graphic and hilarious. So too is Cabin Fever, Roth's debut feature. This is a good Bad Movie, and Roth has no aspirations for it to be anything more -- this is as much a comedy as it is horror and he's most assuredly in on the joke. It fails to avoid convention and cliche, but does so on purpose. The ending is great.

I'm not really a fan of Roth, and so much of this movie is why. I'm split on how I feel about this, one because Roth's uses so much gore imagery to create "horror" in his films, but for the most part it doesn't work, but here it is kinda does because of how gross it is. It's quite campy, and it's not like there is much of a story arch, but for horror, it did creep me out. Some of it was really unnecessary, but I believe in some world this could happen, and that does it for me.

Enjoyable horror pastiche may be more fun to watch if you are spotting the both obvious and more obscure nods to past genre entries - while this is rarely scary (even for a cheap scare like this viewer), or especially unsettling, it's a fun enough diversion, with the technical merits (nice make-up work and better cast performances than you would expect) more than compensating for the short-falls.

None of the characters are in the slightest endearing, keeping you from sympathizing with them and caring about what happens to them; while not being vile enough or fleshed out enough for you to enjoy their inevitable fate. Good points: the ending was amusing, and surprising. The movie has a fair amount of blood and gore if that's your cup of tea, and for an actor it has "Sean" from Boy Meets World, which was a source of endless amusement.

Any movie that starts with a bunch of kids in a car, travelling to an isolated cabin is either going to end in a plague of zombies, anal sex, red neck murderers or skin eating virus ... sure as hell, ain't gonna end well!! The trouble with Cabin Fever is that it doesnt try to break out the mold and is totally formulaic, right down to the "sequel coming" ending. In fact the whole plot is designed to make a sequel possible; there can be no other explanation for some of the actions in this mess

Really? You thought this was good? Okay. Well, anyway, just so you know, if you're trapped in the woods with some people who are sick, just try to know something. Like that the disease is clearly not airborne, so you're probably going to be just fine. And try not to go get involved with the nine million deviants and inbreds who are all wandering around unconnectedly in the woods. Eli Roth is a hack. A hack. A HACK.

Top badass moment? Despite all the carnage going on, Marcy takes a bath. Not sure if it's bravery, bravado or just stupidity, but shaving your legs when you've caught a skin-falling-off disease doesn't work for me. Putting personal hygiene ahead of retaining your skin is misguided, but then again I'm not an attractive young woman, so what do I know? However, setting your own priorities in life is badass. 0 cats and 0 decapitations, but a whole head does get totally wasted by a shotgun blast.

Doesn't have much of a semblance of a plot, except "teenagers dying gruesomely." Beyond that, nothing really matters. It mostly relies on shock/gross-out value, but at some moments they even resorted to the sort of cheap tactics you see in a screamer. You think everything's calm and normal, then BAM! Scary image and loud noise for no reason, not connected to the current scene in any way whatsoever. In case you forgot this is a HORROR movie.
