This one feels its age. It feels more than a bit convoluted, the intertitles are generally too long. There are aspects to love, though. The sheer scale is impressive (maybe the biggest before Intolerance?) with super cool sets and props, etc, like so many silent movies have. It definitely qualifies as an epic.

Lovely prose. Entertaining story. Watched it on a stormy night on the beach while drinking copiously, set speed to 1.5-2x as usual for silent films. Recommended viewing context.

Impressive sets and human effort for its time. However, it's difficult to enjoy due to the underdeveloped narrative, tedious scenes and its length.

Surprisingly entertaining, this early, silent, Italian epic feature film had enough interesting drama and characters to go along with the action and fantastic set design to make for a solid adventure movie. The biggest issue is simply the length, slow theatrical pacing, and episodic structure sort of makes it tempting to just watch the film in chunks. Unfortunately the epic scale makes for a double edged sword where I was routinely engaged, but also was still kind of always ready for it to end.

2nd half may be hazy, overall Cabiria is an entertaining 2hr epic. Flavius&Maciste are wonderfully heroic &their exploits& stunts still hold great adventure 100 years later. I don't ever use the word "intrepid" but I feel it fits here, mostly because through battles&journeys&imprisonment they still take hold of their fate and conquer and succeed. This pure spirit of heroic adventure keeps Cabiria from being a "museum piece"

Some of the scenes are designed unbelievably good. On the other hand, some of the scenees were so outdated that I thought it was not even new in 1914. Great set design, that's for sure and tracking shot looks like a miracle but the movie so long and lacks from psychological depth so much. Everything is so thetrical and it runs over two and a half hour. Stıll, recommended for those who have interest on the history of cinema.

Extravagant art nouveau-ish sets and a sultry atmosphere of voluptuous vulgarity mark this as a bad taste classic of late 19th century romanticism. I would compare it with Wilde's Salome or Flaubert's Salamambo, a French novel on which this film is partially based . Turgid as storytelling, it's at least somewhat entertaining as spectacle. One problem is those long, text heavy intertitles that force you to read the story rather than letting you see it happen.
