Caged

The best of the woman's prison pictures. A powerful film. This is worth seeing for Hope Emerson alone.

underrated film noir and WIP classic with Eleanor Parker's tour de force.

An expose of a broken prison system through a compelling drama with the twist of it being a women's prison. It's very good and gets better as it goes along though it feels a bit hamstrung in places.

Pretty gritty for the time.

"Thanks for the haircut." lol Eleanor Parker is great in this one, and truly runs the gamut from wide-eyed ingenue to hardened floozy. The kitten thing seemed a bit tacked on (although the scene where they were all standing around watching it drink milk was cool...and kinda like the great moment when they all look up as the train thunders past). Anyway, it features a lot of characters but they all manage to come out seeming pretty distinctive. And the ending is as nicely cynical as they come.

So very bleak. A brute force indictment of of the prison system.

this is much more a penitentiary system reform advocacy than a true film noir

The original Nurse Rached as a women's prison guard. In a somewhat daring move for the studio, we question what a prison should be: a place for punishment for criminals, or a place for reformation. Almost seventy-five years later, we still haven't found what works. This has good performances from the whole cast, but sometimes the scenarios pull their punches and sometimes they're just ridiculous.

Loaded with cynicism and amazing cinematography. I never expected a "women in prison" movie to look this incredible. It's relentlessly bleak, and the only happy moments get squashed instantly. Hope Emerson is once again imposing as hell, but perhaps a bit over-the-top. Parker was a little trite and annoying at the beginning, but seems to settle in the role more convincingly as the character starts to toughen up. Overall, I have some reservations but in general I thought it was very powerful.

Despite having some sluggish moments and being too theatrical at times, Caged is excellent on multiple levels and clearly underrated as a film. Parker gives one of the best performances of the time and there are no weak links among the supporting women. However, it's the cinematography that impresses throughout and perfectly underlines the bleak atmosphere of both the actual setting as well as the style in which the ruthless story is told.

good movie

Caged is a fairly early example of a true Women in Prison film, long before that premise sprouted a whole subculture of exploitation cinema in the 1970s. It is just a melodrama, but it's not a bad one. It has many cheesy moments, but just enough complexity to chew on.

How can someone named Hope (Emerson) leave such a feeling of hopelessness? She's a unforgettable character in a movie filled with characters, as this abusive authority figure in a women's prison. That mock was so punchable. You really felt for Eleanor Parker and the other prisoners, along with the prison system Agnes Moorehead had to fight. A damn good Caged (1950) story.

A tiny bit better than i thought it will be.
