Aniston creates a character who is fiercely intelligent and sharply perceptive beneath the pain, the grief, and the opiate haze. The first third of the movie is absorbing, as it reveals little by little how she came to be like this, but the second third just limps along looking for a plot, and the last third is even less focused. Still, Aniston proves she is a fine actress, and deserves better scripts in the future. (Huffman is fine as a therapist, as is Adriana Barraza as the housekeeper.)

Believe the hype about Aniston, who gives quite a lived-in and natural performance. She nails not only the air of sorrow and bitterness surrounding her character but also the comic beats. No complaints about her at all. The movie surrounding her, however, is a drag. It doesn't have anything new or interesting to say about pain or grief as it just slogs through a series of plot points. A boring star vehicle, I guess?

For all of the energy Aniston puts into a surprisingly great performance, it seems somewhat wasted on a film that can't escape the weight of its own self importance.

This is Oscar pandering at its absolute weakest. The cast is above average, but no one's great - most notably Aniston. This is a 90 minute film that should've been two hours while cutting 30 minutes of the theatrical cut.

This film got a lot of attention for Aniston's performance, and yeah, she's pretty good. Not Oscar-worthy, I didn't think, but surely one of the better performances of her career. I think I liked Barraza's performance more, actually. The movie itself is okay. It doesn't cover much that I haven't seen in other dramas about grief. It falls into a lot of the same formulas and patterns, for sure. It has a couple of interesting moments, but for the most part, I found it boring and uninspi

How good is Cake? Sam Worthington is in this movie, and he's genuinely good! All of its acting is good, with Jennifer Aniston and Adriana Barraza being the standouts, but it's a pleasant surprise to see Worthington not ruin it. Meanwhile, the film gets to hit on some heavy themes, become emotionally involving, and work as an impactful character study. Cake is an effective movie from start to finish and well worth your time, assuming you can handle its not-so-sweet themes and characters.

Fell asleep half way through it, pretty gash even if Aniston does do a fairly good act. Not a surprise ending, considering I guessed what it would be and I fell asleep for around an hour in the middle.

A great cast and a moving story, somewhat averagely executed. Aniston is excellent.

An acerbic tone keeps the film away from pure melodrama, and the excellent cast (Jennifer Aniston, Adriana Barraza, Anna Kendrick, and Sam Worthington) walk the comedy-drama tightrope with subtle skill. It would have been easy for this movie to go big and flashy, but it refreshingly remains rooted to the humane story it's telling. The ending is feel-good, which may make some dismiss it, but the journey it takes is anything but easy. Plus, you get to see Kendrick say the c-word.

Downer of a movie but excellent dramatic performance by Jennifer Aniston.

Ok, there really was no need for her hair to always be that greasy though, that doesn't count as acting depressed.

Those who laughed at Aniston for getting snubbed for the Oscar have not seen the movie. I am by no means a fan of Aniston, nor do I dislike her; she's always been one of those stars who's just there. I didn't care about those that derided her talent, or alleged lack thereof, but from this point on I do. Whether you like Cake or not, Aniston secures herself as powerful, venerable dramatic actress with this performance. I hope this will bring her even greater opportunities.

A matronly Jennifer Aniston--with an unreasonably devoted housekeeper--is cranky for almost 2 hours... was there REALLY talk of an Oscar for this??? And she deals with her allegedly complicated feelings about a fellow support-group member's suicide by stalking the dead woman's husband. It's a little fascinating in its awfulness, though. The only reason I watched this is because of Chris Messina, and he had the only moment in it I really liked: whispering the bedtime story to Aniston.

This one knocked it out of the park for me. Good pacing and great acting. Aniston got chapped by the Academy. She should of been nominated ahead of Witherspoon in Wild. The story/script wasn't overwrought. Adriana Barraza was wonderful. Although there were now real surprises I still found myself anticipating the characters next actions.

Quite a disappointment. Funny quote: "You are a white rich woman. Have you ever been detained by the police?"

Although Aniston's fine it's a bit of a one-note performance and everything in this film's been seen a million times before. Watching it becomes a fucking drag after a while.

From the first second I believed that she was in pain, and I never doubted the whole way through.

Aniston is great because she doesn't wear make up (?). She isn't bad, but her performance isn't enough to carry a so-so film. Nothing new about love and loss is said, and the morse, one-note, tone is monotonous.
