The kind of musical that is actually bearable. The songs are fun and the characters lovable.

A rollicking fun, larger-than-life character that Doris imbues with spunk and comedy. Really entertaining.

Not my scene, good performances but still not anything to write home about

Doris Day overracts for comedic effect, which is generally hit-or-miss.

There is only one Calamity Jane, and that is Robin Weigert. Still, there are enough fine songs in this ho-hum western to keep it afloat.

Yee-haw, a real enjoyable girl-Western-rom-farce! Frankly I could watch Doris Day all day - especially when she's in this cartoonish character, with a few good song and dance numbers thrown in. What a star. I like the overall plot but it would be better without so many supposedly hunky men in it. Girl Power is this film's forte! The pacing drooped a bit in the second act... but energy levels were restored for the ending. I'd watch a sequel if they made one... or more of her films sometime soon.

When Nellie McKay released her great 2009 Doris Day tribute album, she described her songs as "uncluttered, sensual and free, driven by an irrepressible will to live." I'd extend that compliment to this sprightly musical itself, a complete delight from the moment Day starts slapping the Deadwood stagecoach onward. I don't even take its quaintness exclusively as camp, I take it as folk art.

I don't like Doris Day. Rock Hudson can kind of make her bearable but he's not here and both the leading men are way too bland to provide any kind of counterbalance. To be fair the writing is awful all around from the dialogue to the characterizations to the general plot, so it's not like anyone is given much to work with.

Classic musicals are hit or miss for me. I just hoped this one would be enjoyable as a light-hearted western farce, and it was exactly that. From the very first song I fell under Doris Day's spell. I just love her tomboyish Calamity and her fun, well-delivered songs. Sure, everything is completely ridiculous, but so what?

Good musical fun. You have to love any attempt to make Doris Day look dowdy and claim she isn't a looker. Doomed to failure that. The film itself is rootin' tootin' fun, whip-crack-away!
