A hurricane of bad taste and bad ideas. If there isn't a dick flopping around on screen or a vagina closeup and I ain't hooting about vulvas, the movie gets lost in its own ghoulishness. Lol a dwarf gets blown spoilers.

This is the kind of garbage that makes you feel as if the Apostles have crucified you to the floor and taken a major piss into your mouth through a funnel. I just love it when a director creates a 156-minutes worth graphic mishmash of violent gore, melodrama, incest, genital mutilation, rape, necrophilia, horse-fucking, mass orgies and hardcore pornography and calls it "revolutionary cinema". I would tell this movie to go fuck itself but it most probably would.

There's more sleaze here than a child porn ring. Possibly the most infamous movie of all time, "Caligula" on the one hand has grandiose sets, extreme violence, hardcore sex and fisting, and on the other has terrible acting, pacing and fisting. Everything balances out to create a stupendous hardcore porn flick that you can watch with the family under the guise of a period drama.

Much like Salo, Cannibal Holocaust and others of that era, Caligula's infamy overshadows the movie itself. I don't know what cut I saw but there were only a couple of truly disgusting scenes. What plagues the film is the emphasis on blood and tits at the expense of everything else, I was at least expecting McDowell to be impressive but all he does is wild-eyed megalomania spliced with weird infantility. Shame, because the sets are incredible. Tiberius' palace is straight out of a Bosch painting.

Though the costumes and set work are incredible, this movie is a mess. Neither cut is satisfactory, as the uncut version has well over twenty minutes of superfluous (and grotesque) hardcore pornography, whereas the R rated cut (almost an hour shorter) removes plot related scenes as well. Some great actors were (and still should be) very embarrased for being in this one.

One of many films of the era to star Helen Mirren & her breasts, 'Caligula' mixes good with bad. I was once told by a friend that this "was the best porno ever made" on account of: 1. its a good film & 2. its a porno flick. I dismissed this ridiculous claim on the basis that 1. It's not a porno (well maybe the uncut version is!?) & 2. Its fucking shit. This is a mess of bad editing and filmmaking, yet it's admittedly strangely compelling with some oddly entertaining performances. Contradictory.

Holy shit I cannot believe I watched this whole thing (no idea what cut it was). I feel almost shameful even ranking it. I mean, I tried really, really hard to like something about it- mostly based solely on McDowell's performance, but this is truly a complete shitfest. Even if you're a huge McDowell as am I, don't waste your time.

The Wolf of Via Sacra. There's a great insanely excessive exploitation epic in there about the corruptive influence of power but sadly it's lost under a heap of unrelated softcore porn. McDowell, Mirren and O'Toole are all great. Have to feel bad for Tinto Brass whose vision was highjacked and murdered by some assholes from the Penthouse. Which does complete the joke on some ironic level.

God movies like this are hard to rank. It's pretty much trash, but at times it's very, very entertaining trash. But then there's the porn scenes, most of which are FAR from titillating and some of which are actually quite terrifying and/or gross. In the end it's pretty much terrible on every conceivable level.

I Claudius manages to be more shocking just by measuring out its acts and giving us grounded characters to bounce it all off of. Beautiful sets and the Tiberius stuff is great, but frankly it doesn't even work as shock shlock after a while.

like Salo if it was made by a retard. it manages to be fascinatingly bad when O'Toole is on-screen, but after he dies it commits the greatest sin a movie can make: it's both bad AND boring. also, about two hours in, one of the extras has obviously fake tits. there is some very base merit in the idea of intersecting porn and mainstream cinema, but this movie effectively buried it. there is more than enough blame to go around, which is fair, because all of them deserve it

Worth seeing just because of what a brazen attempt at cinematic revolution it was. And the sets rival Cleopatra--they must be seen to be believed. But something about this film tells me that everyone involved was too far from sober to make great decisions; the word 'overindulgent' doesn't even cover it. It's far too long, flawed in many ways, and worst of all it gives us no answers for why Caligula is the man he is.

Most outrageously, here's a movie featuring hardcore adult sex to a point where one is sick of it. The Romans were never a people to shy away from epic stories, and there is a great one hidden here, lurking with the atmospheric score and the sea of bodies engulfed in decadent orgies. Unfortunately every scene outstays its welcome, and few make much overall sense. The director has little interest in Caligula's personality, and would rather see him as Cesar apparently saw himself: A mad God.

Jaw-dropping excess, all the drama behind the scenes have made a disjointed mess of the film itself but it works brilliantly as pure, balls-out spectacle. Shakespearean actors hamming it up in sublimely grandoise sets and locations, amongst masses of tits, piss, fist-fucking and cocksucking. Fucking awesome.

So bloated and decadent it could have been directed by Caligula himself. If Pasolini had been an amoral pig instead an avowed anti-Fascist, this would have been his Salo. And even that's giving it a little too much credit.

Over the top and pointlessly ridiculous. Features an over abundance of nudity which wouldn't be so bad if they wouldn't have randomly panned to a nude scene for no apparent reason other than to be like "Hey look hardcore naked people" The acting, costumes and sets were very theatrical and come off feeling a bit stiff. The film is quite a spectacle but unfortunately it wasn't entertaining and I found it very hard to sit through...

Surprisingly watchable Roman epic which emphasises the brutality and excess associated with the most powerful man in the world. No expense is spared on the opulent sets and crowds of extras, and everybody looks to be having a suitably Bacchanalian time, until another traitor gets beheaded or anally probed, which seems to happen quite a lot. Great cast including Malcolm MacDowell and Helen Mirren. A graphic film for sure, but one of the most lurid and memorable depictions of Ancient Rome.

Ultimately the film falls in a heap due to the lack of vision on the director(s) behalf, scene's aren't built properly, blocking is atrocious, shot choices are poor. Only after the madness struck did it seem like they were having a bit of purposeful fun with it all, but you have to wait through 2 hours of what Sasha Grey wouldn't call a hetero/homo/incest sex scene to get there. A R-rated remake would be interesting.

I thought that the rumors of gratuitous pornographic scenes end up being exaggerations and a degree of prudishness, but they really weren't. I don't have a problem with the sex in this film so much as I have a problem with the sex being truly unnecessarily long and serving very little purpose other than to create some crude shock effect - and even still, many sex scenes depicted were exceedingly lengthy, unnecessary, and even annoying.

Even though I had tried to find it by looking up Gore Vidal. Now maybe I should go back and 'untick' the box, but I will probably let it go and see if it makes a difference to my experience of the site. If somehow annoying porn will be everywhere now. As opposed to the kind of porn that isn't annoying.

Oh dear Lord. One of the most disgusting movies I have ever seen. I can't say I am happy I've seen it. However I will give credit for its historical accuracy and also for being disgusting for a good reason: In order to explain the viewer the necessity of murdering this insane person and how absurd his rule was over an empire. Still, it's very hard to recommend it unless you feel you are prepared to see scenes that would be disturbing even in porn. You're probably better off if you skip it.

This movie is bloated, nuts, and flesh consumed by a messy post-production botching, despite being aesthetically lush, decently over-acted and has a wonderful soundtrack. Getting this film as a 4-disc set was a great decision, and the documentaries/interviews of its balls-to-the-wall production gives it a very interesting perspective on the making of this movie. Here's hoping the Ultimate cut does it justice

Bob Guccione's infamous epic has come to be regarded as one of the sickest and worst films ever made. It's neither, being too dull (and long surpassed in terms of transgression) to be the sickest, and possessed of just enough moments which achieve the desired heights of grotesquerie to not be the worst. It's pretty heavy-going, to be fair, and the performances, while not as bad as you might think, don't elevate the material above its repetitive, simplistic nature. Stick with FELLINI SATYRICON.
