Cantata

Jancso's debut is a collection of his formative influences distilled quite neatly into one promising package.Its wandering narrative of an alienated doctor discontent with his seemingly successful life recalls early Antonioni, while some of the editing and musical cues were clearly inspired by the Nouvelle Vague. Jansco handles this clash of styles rather confidently to tell a relatively straight forward story (for him). It's worth seeing for fans who are curious about his less radical origins.

Meditative, fabulously shot, faintly echoes both the French New Wave and Bergman.
