In 1941, Italy allies with Germany and ruthlessly conquers the much weaker country of Greece. On a remote Greek island, an Italian artillery garrison is established to maintain order. One Italian officer, Captain Corelli, adopts an attitude of mutual co-existence with the Greeks and engages in such activities as music festivals and courting the daughter of a local doctor. In 1943, however, after Italy surrenders to the Allies and changes sides in the war, Captain Corelli must defend the Greek island against a German invasion. (imdb)

Look at all these non-Greek actors playing Greeks with the shittiest accents possible. Nic Cage going native Italian again also doesn't help.

Ways this could have been almost good: if… 1) Cage did his Cage thing, 2) the mandolin was magical & talked, 3) Johnny Depp played Corelli and Cage voiced the mandolin, 4) John Waters directed it, 5) Baz Luhrman alternately directed it, 6) puppets were used in some scenes 7) Rammstein did the soundtrack, 8) actual Greeks. Any or 7/8 of these things could make it a minimum score of 6/10. Shoulda be better but I was bored like the child of a hoarder on her monthly 2-hour long Walmart trip.

The scenic backgrounds don't quite make up for the uninspired romance plot or the offensively bad accents, but they do come close.

I feel split on this one. Yes, the various accents are terrible. Yes, it's melodramatic in the bad sense. Yes, the chemistry between Cage and Cruz is off. That said, halfway through I switched to a version dubbed into Italian, and I kind of liked it.

Despite some dodgy accents (noteably Cage's), and some underdeveloped plotlines, I enjoyed this movie. Cage and Cruz give admirable performances and are supported by a solid cast. The soundtrack/score is beautifully chosen but the cinematography is where this movie really shines.

Great chemistry between Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz! A beautiful view, great acting and a good story (lovers whilst being enemies) make for a great movie! Cage shouldn't have done 'the accent' though :)

Another typically sloppy period melodrama, be it one with a couple of terribly miscast characters and the usual flippancy for the source material. Important interactions between Cage and Cruz fail in every respect, often feeling like a joke with a surreal mix of strangely mangled accents and a gradual dispersion of any possible chemistry development. Saying that, the rest of the cast isn't bad and with a few big names putting in good performances the film manages to hold together to some margin.

It's quite melodramatic and soppy, but since I love watching almost anything related to WW2, it wasn't a thoroughly horrid experience. Cage's acting is pretty damn cringeworthy, though.

I don' know why, but I enjoyed this film. I mean, it's soppy, Cage has a horrible accent, and it's a far cry from the novel. But Cruz puts on a great performance, the story is Hollywoodized (although not drastically), and the music is great. Not your average war movie or war love story (A Very Long Engagement was better), but still, one of Cage's better films.
