When the most memorable part of your way too expensive new superhero movie concerns a cat, that's maybe a sign it could have used more unexpected twists, powerful character drama and/or action with stakes and consequences. It's perfectly fine entertainment, you know, in a general sense. Brie and Jackson carry the whole thing nicely. I liked the references to other MCU elements and look forward to Carol's integration into future stuff. (I guess I help fund more of these things, sorry!)

I mostly enjoyed it. I wouldn't say it's in my top ten MCU movies, and while it isn't the most thrilling ride in the franchise, it's still solid Marvel entertainment on its own rights. It's got humor, decent visual effects, and a few fun fights and action. If you have made it this far into the franchise, it's worth a watch (and this review is excluding all of the commotion with Brie Larson, most of which is pretty uncalled for).

A colourful and entertaining Marvel yarn. I quite liked the central story, and I liked the cast, even if the characters felt a bit thin. The de-aged Jackson was rather impressive. It's a shame the fight scenes weren't as well-handled as they could be. This fits neatly into the existing canon without feeling forced, and I definitely want to see where the story and character go next. Good job.

A fine example of Marvel sticking to their working formula, but why try to change it up when they're still making a billion dollars a pop and at worst pump out a decently entertaining flick. From here on out, though, the name power of their new heroes is going to dwindle, even this one is only a hero whose name I've heard once or twice before, but knew nothing about.

Another well-made Marvel movie. It's impressive that they're able to push out this consistency of above-average quality. Granted, that means it doesn't rise to the level of something incredible or special, but I once again found myself having a good time during a (10th) Marvel origin story. Brie Larson and the body-snatching Skrulls are nice additions to the Universe, and young Sam Jackson, post-mortem Stan Lee, and the flerken are fun surprises.

One of the better Marvel origins, avoids nearly all the tropes and pitfalls. Nice to see them do a female hero without constant butt shots, and make her Thor level.I love Avengers, and am glad it won't be a total sausage fest moving forward. Still mid tier overall, but a success in my book

People decided that this movie would suck before it was even released. They were wrong. It's rare for a Marvel movie to have the main character shine and be more likable than the rest of the cast, but here we are. An enjoyable experience.

I like that the film is made with a female voice and tells a female story and that in that female story the female lead (who has superpowers that outweigh the superpowers of every other superhero in 20 previous MCU films) needs a pep talk from her friend to build her up and make her FEEL powerful. Unfortunately came out too late in the series to matter and far too late to just be a regular origin story. Dr. Strange was visual, Ant-Man was a heist, this is too plain to marvel at.(Disclosure: man)

Wow! I left the theatre feeling exhilarated. I am definitely not a Marvel fan, but I loved this one. Brie Larson really shines and Samuel L. Jackson is tons of fun. It feels a bit like Marvel's version of Superman. Man of Steel was my favourite recent superhero film, but now Captain Marvel is up there too. Good writing. Great music and editing. While still following the typical Marvel formula, it's all more interesting and good here. This is exactly the film I go to the cinema for, great job!

I discovered - probably around Ben Mendelsohn homaging Pulp Fiction in an alien getup sipping a soda looking directly at Sam L. himself - that Marvel is now a genre. It's gone beyond sci-fi, action, comedy, opera, nostalgia, to a singular voice and rhythm and escapism. The fact that after blasting through a motherfriggin' spaceship she tells our villain she has nothing to prove, proves these films have a rare kind of integrity well beyond the timely blockbuster.

This ain’t one of the better Marvel flicks - what is it with them and hero origin stories? Story is predictable and the score is dull. HOWEVER it is still a hell of a lot of fun and nice to look at and has an inspiring message that I am happy girls everywhere get to see! Mendelsohn and SLJ are awesome, Law doesn’t really try in a thankless role......but of course it’s Larson who steals the show. She gives an incredible performance, filled with so much heart and personality. Also, a cat!

Holy fuck. This is one of the most solid action narratives I've ever seen; it has a really strong twist built on undermining deeply-held cultural expectations and applying the result to one of the most relevant issues of our time; Brie Larson is energetic and fun while still being intensely emotive; every single supporting character is well-written and well-acted and I can't say that about most Marvel movies or indeed most movies in general; and the climax is so good I don't have space to descri

I was trying to piece together a long form review about this movie in relation to how we are forced to treat superhero movies these days. They are now our pillars of cinema. Marvel has cracked the code of woke late era capitalism. This is poptimism gone mad. I've freaking lost it at the movies. We NEED Captain Marvel 2: Ain't I a Woman? if there's any hope of survival

Its CGI is just okay and it's a little awkwardly scripted at times but its great humour, story, and lead sweep these concerns to the side. A truly surprising perspective shift along with a few Marvel-ous moments of self-actualization (see the tear-jerking "get back up" montage; "you guys have just been holding me back!") are the highlights of a layered, emotional journey of discovery through past and present (with hints of the MCU future of course) with Carol and her enjoyably dry wit.

Marvel's operating in the Pixar zone where directors must be terrified that they'll break the winning streak. It's very difficult to produce such well thought out populist entertainment like this (just ask DC) and this is yet another winner. The standout is Larson, as a layered, fleshed out hero who's badass & tender, thoughtful & impulsive, confused & assured, and follower & leader in a seamless stream. Even in terms of empowerment, the childhood scenes are far more moving than Wonder Woman's.

You're for-sure entitled to not like this movie - emphasis on "entitled" - but I'm also suspicious that you may have wandered into "Cold Pursuit" by accident. Law + AI are admittedly-weak antagonists - welcome to the genre, enjoy your stay, not everyone is Thanos - and it's restricted a bit by tee-up origin-story stuff. But there is no significant drop-off in quality here that isn't being fabricated by your own pre-conceptions about the character, the actress, etc. Hate to break it to you.

A damn underwhelming movie lacking in stakes with awful characterization and boring action scenes. The writing is so damn sloppy - they're very on the nose with the setting being in the 90's (haha, remember Blockbusters? Remember SFII?) with villains so one-dimensional they might as well be wearing twirly mustaches. The film's attempts at drama are laughable when the characters are this wooden and uninteresting. Also, am I the only one who thought the cat was fucking stupid?

This is more of a 73 but Brie Larson singlehandedly spiked the score north for me. Overlong, oddly paced and mostly an exposition vehicle, Captain Marvel shouldn't succeed, but it does thanks to Larson's performance. Larson is electric, and really sinks her teeth into a role that's otherwise underwritten. She turns Vers/Carol into a strong heroine and her progression allows the film to pick up steam, becoming more fun as it goes. Shout-out to Ben Mendelsohn and Sam Jackson for having fun.

Despite being human she never really appeared human in the movie, even when surrounded by friends. Confusing beginning which is in line with her lost memories. The cat was probably overrated. I wish they focused on her past more. I'm mixed about whether they could have done more MCU humor and in-jokes. Brie Larson was gorgeous and absolutely believable as Capt. Marvel. Samuel L. Jackson took losing an eye fairly well. Completely foreshadowed twist. Fav scene: getting up after being knocked down.

The core narrative idea of one of these films being unraveling the mystery of the protagonist’s own backstory is a pretty fresh one, which is interesting. Execution of that idea is a bit ho hum though, with the twists and shape of the story and identity of the villain all being pretty guessable very early on. Carol is also hilariously overpowered by the end, like damn, couldn’t you have swung by earth for the three seconds it would have taken you to deal with Ultron lol

pretty decent, and could have been even better. larson is okay, but somewhat overshadowed by the excellent ensemble cast, mendelsohn should definetely return for the sequels. the balance for the goofy and silly stuff is right this time, and the feminist undertones do not overtake the whole plot. marvel has become the elder watchmaker of this era: predictable, yet servicable plots with excellent casting and a good sense of humor. won't blow your mind, won't disappoint neither.

While I'm all in favor of trading the standard Marvel origin story template for something different, this movie's amnesia storyline never really clicked for me. After a weak opening act the movie sometimes gets into a groove, but I kept waiting to come fully on board. There are many good pieces here, including Ben Mendelsohn, the banter between Jackson and Larson, and some surprising story developments, but ultimately I was a little disappointed.

The plot is super predictable the moment they reach earth, but hell, has any MCU outside of the middle bits of Endgame NOT been guilty of being predictable? You're along for the ride, and Captain Marvel has the requisite thrills and laughs. The humor is more of a constant tone than big hitters just as the action is cool but no setpiece stands tall as memorable for the ages. I'd be down for more of Larson, more of this. A fine popcorn flick, no more, no less.

Very unlike able in this role brie Larson walks over any obstacles as the always smirking unstoppable force and don't bother with her background just throw in some random friend and her kid halfway through. Poor CGI (ruined on a cat!? In a Marvel blockbuster?!) next to some great de-aging. Good skrull acting and story although very obvious via Jude law's devil eyes. Just not on the scale of other marvel, more like the tired old one-dimensional 90's superheros.

Usually the main protagonist of a Marvel movie is fairly interesting and has some personality, but Captain Marvel herself is dull. She has nothing really making her stand out from the pack other than her godlike powers. The visual effects felt fake and more like a video game. There seems to be something off with the editing and how it's shot too. The best thing going for it is Nick Fury and that lead Reptilian Alien Shapeshifter guy. I can only hope and pray Avengers Endgame uses her better.

Larson as Marvel and her budding friendship with Fury is a joy to watch. Jackson finally gets his due as Fury and he is a joy to watch. From the de-aging to the glorious cosmic battles, the CGI was solid, a noticeable step up from the mess that was Black Panther. Barring some pacing and writing hiccups, this belongs in the good percentaile of the MCU.

Though clearly in the same template as other Marvel character origin films, I enjoyed it quite a lot because I've liked Carol as a character since 1988 (!) and this provides another thread in the MCU tapestry. I didn't find anything that I disliked about it, and I was happy to watch it. Brie Larson is great, Sam Jackson is his usual self, and Goose the cat owns. The 90s nostalgia was also cute. I can see why some people find it bland, but I didn't. It was exactly what I wanted the movie to be.

They managed to make an even worse movie than Thor 2. It also has that low budget look of Agents of Shield, a show that I loath. The cast is boring or severely underused (poor Annette Bening), story and action far from what you should expect from the creative minds of decades of Marvel stories and I hated the few surprising things it had to offer (Fury's eye and Avenger initiative name). Oh yes, It's not a total zero because I liked the cat. He outclassed everyone and everything.

Entertaining-in-the-moment sort of stuff that doesn't leave much of an impression once time has passed. This could partially be attributed to Danver's emotional arc being given little heft, creating a general feeling that it's been tacked on. Jackson kills it as a young Fury, leading to some hardy laughs, and his and Larson's rapport is also enjoyable.

The female empowerment mostly works though I felt Wonder Woman did it much better. Aside from that minor criticism, this is about par for the course for the MCU: really entertaining stuff with good action and special effects, some effective comedy, Larson brings a fair bit to the role. Still has a lame villain but I expect that and it's not like the movie is named after the villain, so the focus will never be on him.

Decent, Lynch and Jackson are great, and Larson does a lot with a script that doesn't give her enough, but this script has issues. Second act lacks tension and momentum and Carol's arc is lacking because it kind of gets lost in the plot. It gets the job done but this cast deserved a lot more.

Up there with the franchises best moments and to be honest some of the criticisms I see leveled at this strike me as bizarre. It’s an impressively focused film; there’s no wastage here, every character has a purpose, every scene adds something. Larson is fantastic and makes a mockery of the interwebs micro-penised virgins who were so upset at her involvement. Seeing Danvers go Binary is undoubtedly one of the most satisfying moments in the MCU thus far. Well above expectations.

Enjoyable mid-tier MCU entry most strikingly resembles the original THOR in content and execution - while also sharing its flaws; lumpy and confusing opening scenes detract, but once our hero lands on Earth (and starts sparking with a magically de-aged Jackson), the film becomes a warm, witty and exciting adventure, powered by exciting action scenes (even the usual final act bang and crash is handled with style), fine support work from Mendelsohn, and some scene stealing work by Goose.

Takes many elements of previous Marvel movies and re-packages them in less appealing ways. Most of the side-character movies manage to carve out a niche in some way, like Ant-man's heist-movie nature, Guardians' nostalgia and humor, or Doctor Strange's supernatural weirdness. But Captain Marvel is a bog-standard Sarcastic Marvel Hero with uninteresting powers and an uninteresting origin. Its main justification to exist is a small handful of franchise tie-ins.

Jackson and Mendelsohn are both great, and a 80-90's setting is fun too, but there isn't one scene that has me like "damn, I need more of this" I wanna see more, and hopefully we'll get more, it just feels like a bridge to something bigger.

Luckily the big picture still has impact, and was cleverly surprising. Regrettably unsurprising, in the fine tradition of its genre, was the film's bad CGI (though well done with Samuel L. Jackson). A really good Marvel film - probably not one of their best but it is probably one of their better origin stories. The action/comedy is fun, the characters are engaging, their relationships are well written and the twist is pretty well (although not perfectly) executed. The film does falter occasionally: the story could've been stitched together more tightly, the 90s nostalgia is overdone at points and I thought the Supreme Intelligence scenes were a bit sloppy. Overall though, it was really fun.

The latest entry into the MCU is another watchable enough popcorn movie. However, despite being fairly entertaining throughout, something about the whole thing feels off. The fantasy and sci-fi are difficult genres. The film must feel real. World building must include the viewer. That's why The Prisoner of Azkaban is the best Harry Potter film and why Thor III is great. We knew the settings were bizzare and characters were very alien but still they felt organic and familiar. In Captain Marvel, even humans are cold and distant. Fury is acting like an imbecile and bad guys are just generic baddies. I just wanted it to end so I can forget it as soon as possible.

Despite a neat reversal of the Marvel origin formula (Danvers beginning as a badass alien warrior and slowly becoming more of a normal person) and fun performances from Larson and Jackson, this is slightly disappointing in how standard and average it is. It just feels like a bit of a regression after Infinity War and Ragnarok and whatnot.

OK, so Mar-Vell was Carol Danvers' mentor. I wasn't paying attention so I didn't see if she was *actually* a Captain (kinda young but whatevs), but assuming she was, wouldn't she be Captain Danvers? Isn't it a stretch to like, totally assume someone else's name just because? I mean Maverick didn't go around calling himself Captain Goose after he died. Or maybe he did. that would explain why Meg Ryan's all fucked up now.

A fun enjoyable watch, that suffers from the Superman/Aquaman-syndrome: once the character becomes powerful enough, the script fails to provide tension, so I stop caring. Also instead of just 'discovering' women as audience, I wish they went the Black Panther route and actually did something interesting with the set-up, asking some hard questions. Instead we 'merely' have a woman-stands-up-against-men-saying-no-to-her narrative.

I'm not sure what's more of a mar-vell, the can't-see-it-coming flashback driven storytelling, the edge-of-your-cockpit excitement, the vintage MCU humor, or all the shoehorned female empowerment nonsense that's as organic as it is well executed. I was sufficiently moved by the appropriation of Skrull culture into Honduran refugees. What a time to be alive.

I acknowledge that it's a fairly formulaic origin story & we've seen a bunch of better Marvel movies, but I still couldn't find many big faults with it. Larson was great. The actions scenes didn't wow me & some of the CGI wasn't perfect, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment. It wasn't a terribly funny film, but it didn't seem like they were trying too hard. Ultimately, I do wish they had tried a little harder to make it more special or unique, but I still had a good time.

Loved the theming for 90s SoCal. Brie Larson and SLJ have absolutely amazing chemistry, maybe the best duo in the MCU. Ultimately a very fun movie and characters, that's a little overshadowed in action payoff.

It's weird that this felt so unoriginal, even though the story is actually a pretty unique one for the MCU. Larson was really good, but the movie overall just seemed to kind of limp along most of the time with a few nice moments here and there. It's never terrible, though, and did a good enough job of getting me excited to see what her character adds in the greater Avengers story line.

I thought this movie was quite humorous and a fun superhero movie. Goose and Monica were great. Captain Marvel is a bit flat, but it is hard to fit an adventure and origin story in one movie. Kinda reminds me of Thor. With less romance. Which I appreciated. (The lack of any significant romantic plot).

Borrows a little too much from Guardians/Galaxy and Captain America, and it does suffer from the usual prequel issues, but overall it's a fun movie with a great lead who manages to be unique and easy to root for. Carol and Fury have a good back and forth and the use of the Skrull was overall effective. Kind of boring at times, but still a good action flick.

I went in expecting something like Black Panther--a superhero flick that expands the flavor and politics of the genre. Instead, it was typical Marvel cookie cutter storytelling. A weapon created to fight an invisible/innocent enemy becomes problematic against the user. The worst part is how uninventive this film is when it borrows from 90's pop culture (the soundtrack) & film (ID4, Speed & The Matrix). So, yeah, I'm judging it against other flicks, but isn't Disney asking me to follow along?

Captain Marvel ranks amongst the lesser quality origin stories in the MCU but I still enjoyed it and I’m excited to see what the future holds for the character. The scale feels refreshingly small for the MCU and although the hollow script does Brie Larson a disservice, she still elevates this film dramatically with great support from Samuel L. Jackson & Jude Law. The set pieces are of mixed quality but there is a standout chase, the de-aging effects are seamless and the humour hits throughout.

I can't believe this was worse than Civil War. I shouldn't have kept my expectations this high I guess. I used to love Brie Larson, especially after I saw her in Scott Pilgrim. I still find her cute but I don't like her characther anymore. I know I don't know her personally but she changed after this movie. She got herself a high ego and she's acting around like she's a real superhero. It only works with RDJ dear. Also, the movie is terrible again. I wouldn't watch it if Endgame wasn't a thing.

Just like Goose, who is a cat but also an alien, this movie feels just like the perfect mix of outer space sci-fi and Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Larsson does a fine job and her chemistry with Jackson works very well for the movie. The soundtrack is 90s as fuck and for me that makes for a very good time.

Captain Marvel's biggest flaw is how bland it is. Marvel strikes again with a mediocre film with one initial twist (this one's in the 90's) and like every entry before, it keeps getting less impressive each time. Brie Larson has a serviceable performance as the lead, and the rest of the cast does alright as well. There's just nothing particularly exciting about this one.

Brie Larson has plenty of charisma as the overpowered Captain Marvel. The visual aesthetic is like a darker Guardians, and is top-notch as we expect from the MCU. This origin story is one of my favourites, nicely tying the theme of identity into an action-packed mystery. There are weaknesses in the script and some eyeroll-worthy direction, but these flaws are easily forgiven. As for the overpowered complaints, it makes her a Thanos contender and is a sign the movie is self-aware of its stakes.

?ts too much straight forward and too much obivous. Skrull twist is the only thing that movie can offer in terms of originality/atractivity. Other wise the character has same traits both in the end and at the beginning. There is no arc, there is no lesson or subject to offer. Cat was a terrible pathos device. I didnt like it. Characters were thin and one way type. Good story, shabby script, meh screenplay, good visuals and messy but easy to follow up pacing. Not bad not good.

My initial reaction coming out of this was nothing but love and pure exhilaration. While that hasn't completely waned, I have definitely tempered my feelings. Brie Larson is great in her role and it's a good film. It does many things well, and a few things wrong, but for an origin story, we still don't know enough about the character.

It’s a bit sad that some people made up their minds about this before even seeing it. 11 years into the MCU and we have a female lead. While I do think Black Widow and Scarlet Witch should’ve had solo films first, Captain Marvel is surprisingly fun. Goose is fantastic, action is solid, great twists. My main complaint would be the lack of decent supporting characters. There’s a few, but without Jackson the cast would’ve been slightly dull. Also would’ve liked more Coulson.

Captain Marvel really lives up to its name. It's a brilliant "Girl Power" movie that isn't presented as a "Girl Power" movie. They managed to take relatable, harsh realities and weave them seamlessly into the fantastic world of the MCU. And setting this specific story in the 90s couldn't be more perfect. The characters are all fun and engaging. The story is empowering and encouraging. The humor fits so well in with the storytelling. It's easily my new favorite Marvel movie.

Feels all over the place for a lot of the time, which squanders a lot of the best character development. Captain Marvel establishes itself, though, as a throwback to campy 90s sci-fi and it's a blast in that fashion. Brie Larson is a wonderful lead. Marvel maintains its dazzling visuals and fun action sequences. Not the best Marvel film by a long shot, but enough to tide everyone over for Avengers: Endgame.

Captain Marvel was a controversial movie from the start and is quite an important film for Marvel. However, the plot was a bit mediocre and the plot twist was rushed in favour of a large fight scene at the end. Overall, a good movie, though one that felt out of place in between the two blockbusters that were the Avengers' movies.

Maybe I'm just waiting for the MCU to collapse on itself like a dying star. I know how jaded-jerk that sounds, but when I can see the formula like code overlaid on the picture, it's time to quit the engines. INFINITY WAR was fun because it was unprecedented. But how much farther can we go? We've been asking the question for a while now but, really, after eleven years, we know this will fizzle like comic books did. I was a fan of the comics this is based on way back in the day -- but I just hated this load of junk, and I especially hated the star, who builds her whole performance on a smirk. I've complained in the past about male "actors" who have done the same thing -- it's no more attractive when a women does it. If Female Emancipation just means that women get to take on all of the most unpleasant characteristics of men, then I'm dead set against it. This is no WONDER WOMAN, and not even close.

Most of what enjoyed about Captain Marvel came with Brie Larsen's performance. I like her take on the character as an angry, I've-got-something-to-prove hero that takes each slight against her like a punch to the face. I hope viewers take to heart what she is putting down and find it, at least a little, inspirational. That being said, the rest of the movie is probably a below average origins story. The action is confusing and the plot is fine to bad.

Hey, look! It only took 18 films for the ladies to get their own passably watchable mediocre by-the-numbers MCU origin story! Great! #Feminism Honestly, though, it's skews so closely to the pre-determined Marvel formula, and does so very little that's different, that you probably know exactly what you're getting going into this. Lacking the humour, charisma, or weirdness that make the better MCU titles stand out, it's as bland and safely watchable a superhero film can get.

strong Phantom Menace vibes: a needlessly convoluted plot made for the purpose of retconning in a backstory that no one really needed. the decision to give the main character amnesia in their own origin story means we spend an entire movie trying to understand a character who understands nothing about herself. I guess the audience is supposed to project themselves into her based on vague flashbacks straight out of Got Milk commercials. the closest an actual movie has come to Yvan Eht Nioj.

I feel like Carol was poorly written which made the tone confusing, but in one on one dramatic dialogue moments Larson shines. Its mostly bland, but really the Skrull are pretty great, bumbling idiots with such a powerful inate power they are still scary. Also, its easy to tell whenever it is actually Larson running because she runs, not like a superhero, but a mom on a jog and its kinda hilarious. Same goes for Jackson, but he is like 70 years old so he gets a minor pass.

Brie Larson is definitely the perfect choice for this. I almost forgot how much I like her (as an actress), since she (as a person) has been more than clumsy in her PR endeavors in the last couple of years. But her and Sam Jackson have such great chemistry. Fun to watch. Some things were a little heavy-handed and almost cringeworthy, but they weren't many. And all the Supreme Intelligence scenes were a bit unimaginative. Otherwise a decent job on all fronts.

Plot was very basic, predictable and mediocre.. Best part was end credits with Cap.

There seems to be a very conscious attempt to create a more individualized film here than is usually the case from the MCU. This is also the first time I’ve ever really enjoyed Samuel L. Jackson as the otherwise charisma-less Nicky Fury. Still, for all Captain Marvel does right, it can’t help but fall victim to the MCU’s nearly inescapable problem: These films are so boring.

Captain Marvel, the character herself, is fantastic. But there is a problem here. I think that the ultimate message of the movie lacks a long-term outlook. I mean, our society struggles to accept gender parity, so to resolve the entire movie into a "no-one-can-judge-me" (over simplification) is just another, unintentional, way to put women into another level where men aren't. OK: it suits perfectly for children, straight to the point. Anyway, I love it. Brie is good here, not perfect but good.

By far one of the weaker entries in the MCU. For me, Larson seemed to lack the gravitas or natural charisma for the role of what is to be one of the most powerful characters in these movies. Without a compelling lead, there's little else that's memorable other than SLJ's de-aged Nick Fury. It feels like there may be a better cut of this movie somewhere in the editing room as too many scenes seem needlessly drawn out leading to a movie that isn't as much fun as it should be.

I've seen this movie before from Marvel, but that doesn't mean it's not done well here. Captain Marvel does a solid enough job introducing us to the character, proving Brie Larson as a good match for this iteration of her. It's bland artistically, lacking any of the flair that more recent Marvel films have had, but it's an enjoyable ride with some fun sequences and surprisingly poignant thematic material.

W3E1P0S1M1V1A1R1. MILD SPOILERS. This was Green Lantern with a female lead. And I liked Green Lantern well enough. But origin stories are hard to nail when the origin is of the happenstance-and-unearned-gift-of-powers variety, and this one had an even bigger problem tacked on: the unearned gift was a secret explored only through gradual memory recovery. You can't conceal the origin story and act like its some big reveal when the big reveal is just pure luck!

This had the potential of being a very good Marvel movie, but the screenplay is really weak. Like, DC Universe weak. The exposition was haphazard and the dialogue in some scenes, esp. the one where Danvers is convinced to act in a certain way by her peers were straight out of Steven Seagal movies. Still fun and all, but a missed opportunity. I guess all the resources went to Avengers: Endgame.
