They took the existing silent print and added the soundtrack disc over it. This was one of Universals big box office bombs of 1930. And it's easy to see why. Part of the 1st generation of musicals which quickly waned on the cinema audience, it struggles to find it's appeal beyond the costumes and songs. Won't say it's the worst offender of those early musicals, but it's too romantic in it's ideals to really engage. Does get some action with a brief revolution at the end.
