Caravaggio

1986
Drama
1h 33m
This stylishly bold tribute to the volatile artist stars Nigel Terry as the controversial painter torn between his rugged lover (Sean Bean) and his mistress (Tilda Swinton). Jarman sees the darkly handsome Caravaggio as a passionate man with a liking for "rough trade." An elegant tale centering around both the creative process and the touching homoerotic love story of the two men. (tlavideo.com)

I appreciate what Derek Jarman does different from other historical biopics - not following a conventional timeline, not sticking to historical accuracy for better mood, the use of poetic voiceover etc.- but it still suffers from the same problem as the standard ones in that it feels like you are staring at the world through a plate glass window rather than being in the shoes of the individuals.

beautifully anachronistic retelling of the life of some painter dude.

This didn't work for me at all. Why is there a Casio calculator, a motorcycle and a typewriter in this movie. I guess it's artistic freedom or something. Fuck that. Caravaggio's life is a bizarre tale, this needs a decent movie!

A formless mess. Sort of like "Querelle" with huge artistic pretensions.

When I first read about Caravaggio's life I thought "Damn, this would make a great movie" and sure enough, Jarman was two steps ahead of me.

The thing I love most about Derek Jarman, is how capricious he is, and I think this movie is my personal favorite of his.

The ugly aesthetic Jarman brings to history greatly appeals to me being a lot more lively than the more traditional stuffy period piece route. The film has a lovely poeticism to it, and its look at the artist's life is captivating, though the anachronisms left me more perplexed than involved.

Interesting biography of Caravaggio. The theatrical outlook works fine, especially the lightning; the director has been reading Caravaggio's paintings good. In here the feeling is more important than the story. A couple of scenes were a bit out of canvas though.

A lurid tale of sex and death set in Renaissance Italy. Jarman is far more interested in mood than in historic detail (most obvious in his use of anachronism, such as the use of a calculator); his eye for striking imagery (faithfully recreating the look of Caravaggio's paintings) and theatrical staging contributes to the film's heavily allegorical feel. In addition to its bold storytelling, there's much to ponder in regards to its religious and sexual connotations. A fascinating film.

Information about life of Caravaggio is very limited but this doesn't stop Jarman from making a beautiful and poetic biopic about a great painter living centuries ago. (And of course Sean Bean dies, as usual!)

the editing was so messy, the visuals and dialogues were kinda boring, it was lacking in general, but most importantly: it needed gay sex.

An unfortunate messy story with intentional but inexplicable anachronisms that just make the movie worse. I liked the homoeroticism but needed more gay
