Perhaps the worst musical score I've ever heard. The structural device slows the film down but does add some nice thematic flourishes at various points. Solid performance by Cartlidge but the other lead is rather stilted in my opinion.

Makes Katrin Cartlidge's death sting a lot more, and she's been dead nearly 20 years

give me something this unhinged and messy and raw over one of his safer, more refined works every time. might actually be the closest leigh i've seen to NAKED, only focused entirely on the girls. despite a potentially didactic premise, cheesy flashback device and dated score, it's just so alive, lurching between extremes of depravity and tenderness, rage and despair, remaining ultra quotable all the while. RIP katrin cartlidge, what an absolutely fucking singular presence that woman was.

For quite a short film, it could've done with a bit more at the start, as the characters seem pretty full-on to begin with. The film soon eases into itself and the parallel stories of two different times work wonderfully, not cleverly interspersed, but simply comparing them in a recollective way. This film is easy to love because of the two fantastic leads, though Mark Benton's Ricky is astonishing, yet heartbreaking to watch. A bit slight, but nice.

One of the great character films and a fine blend of silly comedic performances and touching moments of realist observational drama. This is of course what Mike Leigh excels at, and here he is at his best. At first the main characters were so goofy I thought I would hate it, but as it goes on it strikes you that everyone knew someone like that when they were younger. Not hard to identify with the "long lost friend" premise - a rich source of special moments to Leigh.
