There's something truly magical about the way this is filmed. The sets are often quite barren, but that only serves to highlight the beauty of what's left, the dancers, the movement, the mirrors and the few other things that remain. The sweeping camera captures the beauty of it all and the fantastic performances and dancing give the film an incredible tempo that only lets up for a few small scattered moments.

A must-see adaptation from opera to film, Carmen catches many aspects that I love about Spain and it does so in style. Maybe you need that knowledge about Spain and the mentality, but I don't think so. Beautiful women and music and sincerity in feelings, it'll all be there if you catch the next flight. The way the story from the opera interferes more and more in the lives of the artists, is brilliant. And the cinematography is among the 10 best I've ever seen. What an accomplishment.

The photography and choreography is at times astoundingly beautiful, Saura is a master of capturing dance on film. The "tobacco factory" scene is breathtaking. Saura introduces a lot more narrative drama than in Blood Wedding. The story of "Carmen", the story of the rehearsals, and the lives of the dancers bleed together in captivating ways. Laura del Sol dominates the screen with her fiery passion and knockout beauty. A couple of scenes are a little draggy, but overall it was a delight.

Equilibristic long takes, but the script is tainted with clichés, that ultimately kills the overall impression of the film.

OK, yeah yeah yeah, I'm a soulless philistine. I still think this is as dull as dust

By the end, the parallel between the dancers' affair and the Carmen story gets a bit contrived, mostly because there is absolutely no dramatic arc (and only about 3 minutes) between "can't you see that I love you?" and "I don't love you any more!" But there is a lot of marvelous, passionate dancing and music along the way. One wishes Antonio Gades were a slightly better actor--his "smoldering jealousy" looks more like petulance...except when he's dancing.

Watched this in one of my film classes and was among the collection of guys who made fun of it before we watched it. Surprise, surprise I ended up liking it a good deal. I probably was the only one of the group of guys who did because I am the such an evolved male compared to those neanderthals.

Not the type of film I would be too eager to watch, but it was a pleasant surprise! It was interesting how life and a piece of art in this movie slowly blend together, and by the end you are lost of what is a dance performance and what is character's life. The story is not that great, methinks. The choreographer guy would be deep in #metoo scandal right now. The dances are actually cool to watch, and only a bit gay.

I had to watch this film for Spanish class, needless to say it really sucked, minus the women dancing around in those leatards...plus the men are dancing queers
