Two couples stuck in a room bickering. At any point during the movie you'll be annoyed by someone, but then later you're on their side, only to get annoyed by them again. It's organic argument: it just flows, from useless bullshit to more important matters. You get to see who these people are really well throughout the entire thing.

Entertaining and perceptive, but it seems as though the writer didn't really have a trajectory for the characters other than the eponymous concept, leaving a certain amount of disappointment that the clever premise and interesting characters failed to yield the deeper insights into contemporary life for which the viewer might reasonably have hoped.

Funny and intelligent is a winning combination. For me cinema gets no better than when talented actors deliver interesting dialogue. I don't mind theatricality one bit. Even though it pushed believability a few times, I had a blast with this movie - so much so that I was a bit dissatisfied with the short running time and the somewhat abrupt ending.

I wish they had left it as a theatre play... Sorry to see these great actors caught up with this theatrical, disconnected, unnatural script in a small living room, trying to act...kate winslet and jodie foster are so pathetic in their plays as drunk hysterical women (one minute they are perfect, the next they're pretending to be drunk as hell, WTF?)

It's truly a pleasure to see some of the best actors of this generation spar in this clever and concise script. Polanski goes for the understated visual approach and it works like a charm.

Polanski presents masterfully constructed slice of middle-America, that although perhaps not universally representative, is none-the-less compelling and could be applied to similar families across much of the West. At times very funny, the screenplay is brilliant, the performances are just as good, and to be honest only a slightly unsatisfying ending holds it back.

In being terribly irritating and leaving you with the feeling 'I want to leave but I can't', Polanski places you in the same place the actors are in. Splendid acting by - especially - Winslet and Waltz make up for the irritation, while the conversation (and this film is nothing more than that) flows deliciously from bullshit to things that matter - just like your sympathies flow from one person to the next. Irritating, but well done.

High voltage star-power (and Polanski's expected directorial flourishes) highlight interesting drama, which is spoiled somewhat by awkward 'opening-up' of the play, which creates some serious credibility problems (why don't Winslet and Waltz just leave?) Polanski wrings every drop of dark humour out of the screenplay (love the rather humiliating position Winslet finds herself in) and the presence of the stars adds immeasurable interest, but overall film rings hollow.

I have no problem with films that lay their themes on the table, as a subtle script is not always synonymous with an intelligent one. When it comes to chamber dramas like this, which are quite verbose and claustrophobic, it helps to keep things more lowkey and realistic. Carnage opens well, but it quickly devolves into something that feels very stagey. By the end, the characters are shouting the film's themes at each other, and thereafter terminating what credibility remained to the proceedings.

Held back from a higher score by the script, which was originally a play. The acting is very good throughout, and the shifting alliances between the characters who are unable to escape one another's clutches is excellent, until we gradually see that the author's sees the world as a battleground of gender, rather than personality. We needed more family background to push it past that tired old theme.

Really funny performances, and a great script that showcases two couples (strangers) meeting about an altercation between their respective sons. Carnage ensues, as they argue about the wording of the report letter, and ultimately the fight becomes much more personal about their parenting styles and respective personalities. A funny script, and good performances by each of the A-list leads.

While the acting and dialogue are good for the most part, there are times when it doesn't work so well--largely because it feels like theatrical acting and dialogue in a cinematic context. Perhaps the bigger problem is the film's target of satire (e.g., the way people hide their true feelings, the liberal do-gooder type, etc.)--mainly because it's too obvious to be interesting. Still, I enjoyed watching the actors, especially Waltz and Reilly.

Based on an acclaimed play and featuring a very strong cast, Carnage still manages to be at times both a little dull and a little over-wrought. The four main characters pretty much spend the entire film in the same room and it often feels like they are only stuck there because the film demands it. And I think the cultural critiques are at times a little too obvious and on-the-nose.

Dialogue-heavy dramas often excite me. Even when this film was released to tepid responses, I still anticipated it. Carnage opens well, and while I had a few problems with the script early on, I was engaged. Truthfully, I was engaged the whole time, but in a worse and worse way by the end. The characters devolve into caricatures of themselves - Winslet unconvincing, Foster overdoing it, and Reilly and Waltz being assholes. It's the fault of everyone involved that the acting stops connecting.

Great cast all at the top of their game, and who had the only lines in the movie. Roman Polanski probably the reason it hasn't and may not go into wide release in the US. Its continuous antagonistic dialogue with much verbal sparring is reminiscent of Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe, but with different parameters. The story, as you would expect, builds to a crescendo when Reilly brings out a bottle of 18 year old single malt Scotch--best product placement EVER--(need the DVD)! Cheers.

John C. Reilly seems to be in everything lately. Who still finds his always the same character interesting? Great cast, otherwise. It's evident from the start that Carnage is intelligently written. There's realism in the dialogue, with a few hilarious moments. Its quest to gradually step up the carnage then grows more and more labored, ultimately overwrought. It seems to be a rehash of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?", superior to the source but still not great. Despite the best efforts of the script, its strongest points are the performances and cinematography.

This was based off of the play "God of Carnage" by Yasmina Reza and it was awesome! Everyone in the cast of four was incredible. Christopher Waltz was definitely the best in this with John C. Reilly in a close second. The two women (Foster and Winslet) also did a great job but the guys stole the show. Rated R for its language only. Even at only 80 minutes (which allowed me to fit a sneakily short cinema trip into a very busy day) this film combines Aristotelian drama and social satire of insufferable upper-middle class americans, and stuffs it into a film where Kate Winslet chunders everywarrr, and then they all get pissed. And I, stupidly, can barely tell the difference between John C. Reilly and Jeff Garlin, which just adds to the comedy. What's most impressive about this film is the razor sharp direction from 78-year-old Polanski. How Polanski, who is nearly an octogenarian, kept up is beyond me; I'm very impressed. Given its cast, director and premise, "Carnage" had all the potential to become terrific -so it comes as a mild disappointment that it's merely solid and only hints at the more complex issues a better script could have dug into. The four actors are all good, with no one stepping out of their comfort zone. Taking a rather listless approach, Polanski has made the weakest installment of his Apartments of Horror series -offers some laughs, a little insight and 80 minutes of passable entertainment.

Carnage hopes to serve as a mirror to its audience and make us ponder what exactly distinguishes us from beasts, but such lofty aims are squandered when the characters portrayed function only on two modes (civilized and unhinged) with nothing in between, lacking any nuance or depth needed for us to identify with them. The movie has its moments, though they are drowned amidst a sea of unearned self-conceit.
