It's a good concept, and as a concept it's well executed. It's shot very well and balances the fake seriousness with silliness and a touch of melodrama well. Will Ferrell does a pretty good job with his lines and the performances convey the appropriate tone. Unfortunately, it's primarily a comedy, and on that front it stumbles. It's just not very funny, the delivery of most of the jokes is off and many are not that great to begin with.

There are funny moments, most centered around the intentional cheapness of production. Fake horses, fake sex partner, tiny toys as miniatures. They are too few to make it a good comedy though. Still it isn't terrible. Biggest laugh for me was her getting onto the horse.

I have no problem with low-budget humor, but unlike, say, The Naked Gun or Yacht Rock, this film had no jokes except intentional continuity/editing errors and silly effects. Even what few jokes it had didn't have any real substance. I only rated it as high as I did because there were at least two things it didn't do: intentionally annoy in the name of "humor" and bore enough for me to outright hate it.

Starts out very slow. The concept is funny but it needs more jokes to carry the story, since it's already a deliberately stale plot. However, the second half, namely the wedding scene on, is fantastic. The excitement gets ramped up along with the weirdness, the cinematography is surprisingly beautiful, and Will Ferrell is charming as hell. Worth a look, probably better to watch with friends.

"Este es un país de bebés. Compran casas sin dinero. Coches, televisores sin dinero. Llenan sus bocas como monstruos con hamburguesas de mierda y grasa". Will Ferrell rocks.

Besides the fake movie set I thought Will as a Mexican was damn funny.

Much weirder than I expected and actually moderately funny at times. Ferrell, Luna and García Bernal are awesome.

It is played pretty straight the entire movie, which I think was the right choice. It never gets as hilarious as some other Will Ferrell movies, but it's certainly enjoyable and funny throughout.

Pretty funny comedy with a short enough run time that it never wore out it's welcome. I give Ferrell a lot of credit. We always complain his comedies are the same and he did try to do something different here.

It's deeply committed to its own weird conceit, diminishing returns and all.

The opening score reminded me of the start of a classic bond film. After that everything went downhill very fast. Do Will Ferrell fan boys actually love this?

Is the joke supposed to be that it's terrible? Because it's just terrible.

Honestly, I'm sure there is merits to this movie that I just could not find. Very much in the same vein as Napoleon Dynamite, I did not enjoy the style of humor nor was there much I found entertaining. The cast is pretty good I guess. I don't know, it's just not what I wanted.

I was prepared for this to be a one-trick pony that really dragged and while it's true that this is essentially an idea for a decent comedy sketch drawn out into a full-length movie, it find a way to be just entertaining enough to never become tedious. It is never really funny, but it is able to be continually mildly amusing with enough modest high points to get you through the running time. Worth watching, but you could find better options

More pastiche than parody, but bears no fruit by forcing the comedy to yield to the telenovela and not vice-versa.

There is a very slim chance that this might have fared decently as a 5 minute SNL bit, but as a feature length comedy the only laughter comes from how dumb of a concept this is.

Amusing combination of Rob Rodriguez's ultraviolence with McKay. The result is a Televisa soap opera filled with the most bizarre comic set-pieces of this decade. Although some of the gags don't quite work, it's impossible not to love the amount of chroma key standard western scenarios, fake horses and unique production values, like a doll used for a sex scene. This confidence could only work through Ferrell's performance. Nick also "offers" good lines as a DEA cop speaking an egregious spanish.

My friend and I had to get permission from our parents to rent this on Time Warner Cable. I don't even know if this ever hit theaters. Worst Will Ferrell movie I've ever seen and he's made a few stinkers.

I found it funny in parts, but it was a mistake to stretch what is essentially a good sketch into 80 far too long minutes.

The poor critical reception aside, CASA DE MI PADRE is, a few slow spots aside, a great deal of fun; the obvious sincerity of the project only adds to the pleasure. As a satire on the telenovela genre, it's played fairly straight, and quite well at that: Will Ferrell is at his most likable, Genesis Rodriguez shows much promise, and Gael Garcia Bernal smokes two cigarettes at once. Uneven but generally amusing script (love that mountain lion); good score and design; imaginative direction.

Did not expect the message to come through as so straightforward. Ferrel isn't annoying, Bernal is funny, the lady is smokin. Good, despite some dumb sections.
