This Martin Scorsese film depicts the Janus-like quality of Las Vegas--it has a glittering, glamorous face, as well as a brutal, cruel one. Ace Rothstein and Nicky Santoro, mobsters who move to Las Vegas to make their mark, live and work in this paradoxical world. Seen through their eyes, each as a foil to the other, the details of mob involvement in the casinos of the 1970's and '80's are revealed... (imdb)

Like a gaudy, coke-fueled Greek tragedy about the meteoric rise of an ancient lumpen desert civilization and its eventual destruction at the hands of its greedy, corrupt rulers. Throw in the beautiful "Theme de Camille," and you got yourself an unforgettable (though admittedly flawed) small-scale epic. Lots of folks will call this "Scorsese on autopilot," but for me its neck-and-neck with Taxi Driver as his best.

My take on the obvious comparison to Goodfellas: Scorsese merely reshuffled the deck and once again came up again with aces, but lower level aces, and they took longer to reach the table, like a slightly arthritic dealer that compensates for his advancing age with lively banter in between hands. It's not a masterpiece, but it's full of masterful moments, and pretty much everything that Scorsese can do as a film maker, technically, in terms of craft, is present here, for better or worse.

(rewatch) Despite it being written by the same guy who did Goodfellas, I find those comparisons lazy at best. It's basically 15 movies in one so it's just a treat to watch. Accurately displays what the great Dr. Dre says "you can't make a hoe a housewife." Joe Pesci is so alpha you may actually grow chest hair while watching this.

A man tries incredibly hard to play the game and make good, but, despite all his money and effort, he can't keep hold of his beautiful wife (too deeply imprinted by James Woods!): there is a strong sense in which this film is a remake or updating of Godard's CONTEMPT (the music choice gives a clue about this). Along with GOODFELLAS and THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, part of Scorsese's great trilogy of anthropological quasi-documentaries. RAGING BULL and MEAN STREETS could probably be thrown in there too.

A pretty decent movie in its own right, although De Niro, and Scorsese have both done better. The movie seems to have no climax, it just kind of goes to an unsatisfying resolution instead, and it doesn't quite work, but I wouldn't turn anyone away from this, it's definitely a good watch, but not great.

An odd choice to call Scorsese's best? I'm willing to make it. You'll think it's too long and the performances aren't all there. You'll think it's just a rehash of Goodfellas (rather than a sequel.) Then you'll watch the scene between De Niro and the local Nevada politician and get chills. It's all subtle. It's also the most devastating critique of American capitalism I've ever seen.

No one in this movie seems safe from anyone, so for three hours you just keep waiting for things to blow over, wondering just who is going to get it in the end and just how. It's really compelling to watch, lovingly directed by Scorsese and luxuriously produced. Looking at the cast I have to say Pesci steals the show, with much the same cocksureness with which his character shakes Vegas down for money, no small feat considering the competition.

Overly long and indulgent Vegas mobster flick that still manages some great scenes. With the length everything gets tiring including the switching narration, repetitive backroom machinations, but especially Stones whining presence. De Niro's character felt like a retread of his established mob persona, yet by the end his motivations still weren't clear to me. Scorsese's slick direction keeps it enjoyable enough, but the story is a step down from his best.

Casino is dissappointing considering it is De Niro and Scorsese teaming up once again, and it falling short compared to others like Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and Raging Bull, but Casino is still another satisfying mob flick by the great Scorsese. It's character development is quite good which is also apparent in all of Scorsese's films, and the length is not a bother whatsoever, but it didn't seem to have the same De Niro - Scorsese aura around it. I highly recommend this picture.

Admittedly Casino isn't the best collaboration with Scorsese and De Niro. Now that isn't to say it's a bad film or even anything less than a brilliant film just that they've done a bit better previously. It's hard to really say anything that hasn't been said before. It's a Scorsese gangster flick so you can expect a brutal, but great, story, interesting characters and a superb cast. Definite must see.

GoodFellas and Casino are both about the rise and fall of criminal empires. But whereas the former gives us a gritty, intimate street-level perspective, Casino is pure, sleazy melodrama, rendered in bright neon. And while it lacks GoodFellas' dramatic intensity, it makes up for it by being wildly entertaining from start to finish. This movie never, ever slows up for even a minute, and it's exhilarating as a result.

"Casino" never really connects with you, it never grabs you on an emotional level. For a long film it doesn't use the time it has well. It feels somehow rushed, near the start almost like a clip show, and never manages to allow the viewer to attach to the characters. De Niro offers a solid performance, but Pesci is mostly average and Stone seems to take the "if I yell a lot I'll win an oscar" approach to emotional scenes. It's a good film by Scorsese, but it is utterly eclipsed by his best.

A very thrilling and up-tempo movie, it really doesn't stop for a second. It keeps going without waiting for the audience to breath. Sharon Stone, Pesci and De Niro are all trying to act the other one off the screen, but eventually end up being just great as a package. The voice over was a great approach for this movie, De Niro and Pesci give extra depth and excitement in this way of narration. ... A 178min trip of violence, contempt and deception. Nice!

While Scorcese works hard to engage the viewer with the camera, the shots strike me as ostentatious, drawing attention to themselves rather than to the action itself. As for the narrative, it's hard to care for any of these people, and a movie that is about little more than exploring the notion that "look corruption is everywhere," just doesn't strike me as all that groundbreaking or interesting.

Gets an unfortunate reputation as a repetition of Goodfellas [as if Scorsese hadn't used similar themes before?]. The comparison is there but I prefer this in cast and atmosphere; Goodfellas feels like a cartoon next to this. The final chapter is especially chilling.

It shares so much stylistically and thematically with Goodfellas that it would be hard to separate my opinion of one from the other so I will cop to my opinion being colored by having seen Goodfellas first. I think Bracco and Liotta made better narrators than DeNiro and Pesci (which surprised me) and I thought the music choices we less inspired (not uninspired) than the ones in Goodfellas. Still great though.

At first it seems like Scorsese doing Goodfellas again (And maybe trying to top it) and I can see why. It has the ridiculously good long takes (There's tons in this movie), De Niro and Pesci, a crazy lead woman, a descent into drugs, a rock n roll soundtrack, lots of swearing and bloody violence. But it really is different and almost as good. There's some powerful, gruesome scenes and great performances. The direction is in top-form. Marty wanted to top Goodfellas. Overall: Long, but great.

Sharon Stone's hysterics for the last hour or so start to get very repetitive and tedious, its style feels more rough around the edges (even garish at points) than Goodfellas and despite all the snap Scorsese puts in to the film it ultimately ends up feeling a bit flabby. Yes it borrows the antagonistic view that Scorsese mastered during Goodfellas, but this matches and supersedes that precedent. Here, he not only delivers a masterful story of greed and corruption turning in on itself, but also delivers a farewell to an era of gangster cinema, and perhaps even an era of American history. Boosted by the utterly fantastic cinematography of Robert Richardson, this is in consideration for the best film Scorsese ever made, which is a high praise indeed.

Three hours of DeNiro and Pesci telling me a story. Overall it isn't a bad movie, and Pesciputs on quite a show and deserves some props as his character goes out of control throughout the movie. The problem for me is that this is way too long. I mean they could have cut out some of the beginning stuff and just started it in Vegas in my opinion, and I don't think anything would have been lost. My date fell asleep, woke up and fell asleep again (and the movie still had not ended).

Scorcese turns his mobster attentions to the glitz and glamour of Vegas and its rather more unsavoury and brutal underbelly. De Niro is 'Ace' Rothstein, based on a real life bookie and gambler turned casino manager but his attempts to run a legitimate casino operation as a front for the mob are continually foiled by his trigger happy, power hungry old pal (Pesci) and a weakness for woman. Its violent, sexy and a fascinating insite into the history of this famous gambling town.

I'll never understand why Scorsese made all these gangster crime movies - I prefer his more recent departures from this theme - but this is as good as any of the crime films he ever made. He has managed to do something with violence that few filmmakers have been able to do - make it more horrifying and repulsive than it is entertaining, and this is admirable. I just have to wonder what the point of this story is. It seems so primitive for such a master filmmaker.

A good enough movie on its own, but a heavy retread of Goodfellas which I think is better in most aspects. De Niro and Pesci kind of play the same guys, and Pesci doesn't quite carry the same intensity. Remarkably fast-paced for its length: Engaging narration (a great juxtaposition of De Niro's calm, calculated reflection with Pesci's hilarious expletive-laden commentary), a wild soundtrack, and a script packed with the intricacies of casino mob life (it does get a bit confusing at points) keeps it fresh throughout and sucks you right in to seedy 70s Vegas. The plot is no slouch though, with the wild Ginger (Stone is excellent) spicing up the gangster goings-on with some feisty personal drama.

Many have criticized "Casino" that it is inferior to Scorsese's previous Mob film, "Goodfellas". My issue is not that it's inferior to it (it is), but that it's trying to be like it. It's like Scorsese is trying to copy himself -and, for the most part, he actually succeeds. But there is a basic problem: you 'll find yourself stunned by the craft and skill, but will be left untouched by the story. Some truly amazing sequences in a film that should have been shorter and tighter and more engaging.

I give it a equals (based on a scale of negative, equals and plus). I cannot say it wasn't done well. And really the problems I have with it seem typical Scorsese.
