The Japanese equivalent of the Dune movie, in that they condense about 50 hours of plot and hippy philosophy into a 2 hour movie. Still did a pretty good job.

A failure which is still admirable in what it tried to do, an anime adaptation that emphasises its seriousness in a way that is trying to be thoughtful, not necessarily because of its anti-war message but because of the humanity of the heroes and villains, and attempted to combined human actors with CGI to create a living animation. The result is an utter mess, with a plot far too large to sufficiently work in 2½ hours, and its incomprehensible fight sequences, but I'm glad for its existence.

The cover of this movie quotes a critic saying that it's better than both the Matrix sequels combined. That is blatantly incorrect. There are some good action sequences in this movie (maybe about 15 minutes worth altogether), but they don't live up to the action scenes in the Matrix. Furthermore, it suffers from the characteristically ephemeral (and for me unintelligible) Japanese storyline. Not worth watching for anything other than the action sequences...

Cool graphics, and the plot is relatively well kept together at the start, but I just felt it began to deteriorate. They could have turned it into a trilogy, although I doubt I would have watched all three. The fight scenes were nothing special, the dialogue is cliched, and the continual deadpan look of the scientist is frustrating.

Starts off as quite a sumptuous if overly melodramatic dystopian sci-fi movie. About 1/3 of the way through it suddenly changes into emo Power Rangers and things stop making any sense. People develop super flying powers, characters suddenly appear in places where they weren't 2 minutes ago, people walk out of explosions unscathed. Utter nonsense, but it's just about watchable because of the glorious look of the movie.

Not even all the eye candy in the world can make up for such a generic and poorly written story.

Everything I love about movies comes together in Casshern. An audio visual experience like no other.

The perfect movie for dumb 12-year old boys. Nonsensical to the extreme, terrible CGI, and one of the villains is a mongoloid to boot. Classy.

It feels like an anime. But not a very good one.

Visually thrilling but thats it. When there isn't some badass action going on (a majority of the film) it is either extremely boring or profoundly confusing. A shame really...

While difficult to understand , Casshern is simply an awesome picture that will develop a huge following over the years. Take the time to understand this, and you should love it. It is NOT a happy picture though, and is very emotional in tone.

Casshern's cinematic recipe is heavy on anti-war sentiment and Shakespearean tragedy, and surprisingly light on over-the-top action sequences. The action scenes are indeed few and far between, giving way instead to actual storytelling. The storytelling is only surpassed by the visually stunning world where it's played out, having been filmed virtually on a green-screened backdrop. I'd recommend the longer cut version, as the standard US 'director's cut' has poor Japanese to English translation.

Steam Punk, futuristic dystopia crossed with Eraserhead. I lost my way in the movie a couple of times but if you just hold on and enjoy the ride its quite fun.

Too...big, too much. You get sort of overwhelmed by all the huge, swelling music, epic speeches and crazy action. I mean it's beautiful and stylish and all that, but, let's maybe just take it down a notch?

This movie is so nice artistic exhibition, that I would have wished to see it being high... But I have seen it sober and I feel so lost in story not only because of its length... This is movie full of allegory.

Every hurtful cliche of Japanese pop culture loaded into one anime-inspired, superpowered, robot-packed bundle of semi-goodness!

This could have been a good movie if they'd spent more money on making the plot even vaguely comprehensible and less on cramming in every visual effect they could think of. Basically, Casshern would have been pretty good if it had been a different movie.

Visually sumptuous and always a pleasure to look at; if only the plot were a little clearer, and the characters more appealing, this might have edged up into masterpiece territory - not quite sure I understood much if anything on the first viewing, but would certainly welcome a second viewing to sort it out; a confounding but intriguing effort.
