A decent little western/comedy, but nothing special...though the image of a drunken horse leaning against a wall is pretty funny. Lee Marvin won an Oscar for this movie, but I think the Academy just gave him one because he deserved it for The Killers in 1964.

Lee Marvin is hilarious. The rest is average.

It is very hard for me to explain why I sort of like this movie. Its most obvious asset is Lee Marvin, while Jane Fonda phones in a role that's very far from Belle Starr or some sort of feminist subversion of the Western. Her successes are all achieved through her enthralled male suitors doing things for her -- removing her need to have brilliant ideas, rescue anyone, or shoot anyone deliberately. It's not very funny either, but it just has something about it.

A film that succeeds in fits and starts. Jane Fonda is luminous (albeit phoning in a bit of Doris Day's Calamity Jane), Lee Marvin is exceptional, Nat King Cole shows up, and there is a notable barn dance that happens to be filmed in one shot. While the elements never really cohere, nothing wastes your time.

Score based on distant memory, mainly of Lee Marvin's performance.

Perhaps the only time I can ever say Lee Marvin failed me.

Bleargh. Very dopey and very broad, and not at all endearingly so... like some sort of dumbass music-hall farce that I outgrew decades ago

A fun and lighthearted musical comedy western. It makes good use of western conventions, has some memorable shots and enjoyable performances.

A very funny offbeat western yarn with a magnificent comedy performance by Lee Marvin.

Not nearly as clever or innovative as it pretends to be. It tries very hard to be hilarious--and that never works. Lee Marvin is pretty darn funny, though.

Possibly the best "Western" comedy ever, this features one of Lee Marvin's most remarkable performances, and is guaranteed fun through and through. Not a masterpiece, sure, but this is a very enjoyable, sweet, and funny spoof of Western themes. Plus, you get to see and hear Nat King Cole!

It's kind of like a McCabe and Mrs. Miller-type of western; a little tongue-in-cheek, a little serious. It's not bad, just not great.

A handful of scenes are quite enjoyable, but I really don't have anything else to say about it. Since I feel that way about most westerns, I guess it fits right in.

Affable comedy that didn't make me laugh that much but also didn't ever annoy me. Good clean fun, bolstered by Jane Fonda and Lee Marvin's charming performances.

The use of music to move between scenes create a more playful feeling for this western melodrama. That feeling helped in making some the comedy a little funnier and more comfortable to believe.

Comedy is hard to do well, and everyone has different expectations. This one hit me in the funnybone the right way. Lee Marvin takes a pretty stereotypical role and goes over the top for a memorable performance. There's enough of a plot to hold this all together (in addition to the sing-songy narrative bits), even though it's clearly derivative.

Barely funny in its best moments, incredibly dull in its worst.

Jane Fonda is both hot and funny and the movie has got its moments of laughter and adventure. Weirdly enough some of the best parts were with Nat King Cole + Stubby Kaye singing their weird little ditties about Cat Ballou. Overall it's still too much of a mess to entirely work for me. As a comedy it doesn't quite get there and as a western the plot is too shallow to be enjoyable. Too bad, I really wanted to see Jane Fonda being a total western lady badass, but it just wasn't in the books here.

Jane Fonda is good in the lead role in this film. Lee Marvin is also fun in his role. The script has a few dated moments but also some funny ones. Overall I would recommend this film,
