Clearly this was Paul Schrader's elaborate scheme to shoot some scenes of Nastassja Kinski walking around naked (of which there should have been many more).

This remake inserts incest into the storyline & calls a character "Female" for no reason. Large chunks of story are also cut out (How does Heard react to Irena's attack? Why does she leave & come back? To redo the pool scene? Stalk O'Toole who's no threat? ) Despite all this, I like the score & looking at Kinski enough that I might have given it a 65, but then there's a string of false endings for about 50 minutes longer than necessary. Only 2 of the 50 tells you something you didn't know.

Everyone else is rating this for the fact that a woman gets naked, right?

Good premise, fun execution, some spooky scenes scattered throughout and a tight soundtrack by Moroder. It's essentially a sex-fueled werewolf flick that hits its marks pretty well.

The darkest moment of my movie-watching career has been realizing I kind of like Cat People.

Very interesting remake of the 1942 film that frames sexual frustration in a horror context, complimented by striking visuals and a memorable soundtrack by Giorgio Moroder. Along with John Carpenter's The Thing from the same year, this is a remake that holds up on its own terms.

"...hammering, art-porno ... if this 1985 film were any heavier, it would probably crash right through the screen."

I jerked off so much to this film when I was young and it came on Encore late night.

Any movie with a David Bowie theme song is a winner in my book.

Schrader's erotic horror film oozes atmosphere and has a nice dose of some Cronenberg images, but man is it hard to watch without laughing. The most praise goes to Kinski, as she nails the feline look while delivering an oddly captivating performance.

The third act was unfocused but I don't blame anyone. When you have Kinski on set, no one can focus on their work.

If you check out the commentary, Paul Schrader explains that everyone on the cast and crew, himself included, were "required" to do an excessive amount of cocaine each day of shooting. It shows but still doesn't account for what the hell is wrong with that guy. Features some of the worst animal cruelty to ever be released in a film but manages to be irresistibly trashy and disgusting. Also features one of the most unlikeable film protaganists ever.

I seem to be one of the very few people that like the remake better than the original.

Silly but entertaining horror that's less a remake than a reimagining of Tournier's version. It's also vaguely reminiscent of The Hunger because of its themes of death and desire and its video clip style aesthetic long before it was fashionable. It's inferior to that film, mostly because it lacks a convincing central performance (i.e. Kinski is wooden) and it isn't as visually impressive, but it's atmospherically gripping and Schrader proves surprisingly adept at delivering lurid thrills.

I love the original, but I will give this remake credit for going in a another direction. They went rated R for sex, nudity and violence, but it made sense in the story being told. Loved the music and the cinematography. Had that eerie old horror movie feel at times.

Loses its way a few times too many and, overall, for too much of its runtime. There are some strong images and moods that punctuate the mess, but nothing quite as cohesive as in Tourneur's film. Perhaps manages to leave a more searing impression on the mind, largely thanks to its 80s colour scheme.

Schrader adds erotic body horror and removes most of the original's fantasy vibe -- despite recreating stalking and pool scenes --, producing a good-looking, if uneven -- so bloated it plays like a 150min film -- typical 1980s moody, provocative -- lotta incest is suggested from the origin story (parents were siblings) and McDowell and Kinski's characters, althought not consummated -- piece. I hope they never remake it again, otherwise we'd be getting some PG-13 shit trying to look like R-rated.

A good horror remake. It's not perfect and has a few problems, but what it does well it does really well. Intensely sexual without always being explicit.

Não lembro do filme. Só lembro da cena da pantera arrancando a mão de um tratador. Pros meus 5 anos da época, foi marcante.
